Detachment 1 40th Infantry Division Band is one of the oldest units in the California National Guard, and one of the oldest bands in the United States Army. It was first organized May 8, 1861 as the band of the First California Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Eventually re-designated as The 59th Army Band in 1947, the band was known as “The Governor’s Own” until its recent reorganization under the 40th Infantry Division, when it was given its current title of Detachment 1 40th Infantry Division Band. Stationed in Sacramento, CA, Det 1 40th ID Band is staffed by some of Northern California’s finest musicians, many of whom are graduates of outstanding universities and schools of music. The band's 41 members reside throughout Northern California and meet once or twice a month to rehearse and support military and community events throughout the state. Band performances include a variety of music from patriotic selections to standards from the Big Band Era. In order to fulfill its mission of providing music throughout the spectrum of military operations, Det 1 40th ID Band performs within ten different ensembles, which include: Concert Band, Stage Band, Rock Band, Jazz Band, German Band, Marching Band, Fife and Drum, Bagpipes, Brass Quintet, and Woodwind Quintet. This last year, the band and its ensembles performed at 44 events for 70,000 people (military and civilian), not including nearly 2 million people via local and international television broadcasts. The band has seen service in the Spanish American War, the Philippine Insurrection, World War I and World War II. Det 1 40th ID performed for every California governor's inauguration from 1928-2011 and is still a regular performer at the State Capitol. It is the only Army band to have performed for England's Queen Elizabeth, on her visit to California in 1984. The band also prides itself on being the only National Guard band featured on a nationally produced recording of Army bands. For the full lineage of Det 1 40th ID Band, please see the following link: http://www.music.army.mil/organizations/pages/?unit=59AB&p=history&s=lineage To examine official documentation of the lineage of Det 1 40th ID Band, go here: http://www.militarymuseum.org/LH59ArmyBand.pdf
