The Honors Program at Colorado State University is over 50 years old and it still remains committed to the ideals envisioned by its founder, Professor Willard Eddy. In 1957, the same year that the University changed its name from Colorado A&M to Colorado State University, Willard Eddy created the foundations of the Honors Program. Today, the program continues to build on this framework by enrolling outstanding students and recruiting excellent teaching faculty; offering small classes, such as interdisciplianary seminars; and developing students' intellectual capabilities, personal talents, and character through curricular and co-curricular learning experiences. The GSSE MBA seeks to provide sustainable enterprise solutions to some of the most stubborn issues of our time including poverty, disease, malnutrition and environmental degradation. We do that by graduating students with the appropriate training, experience and character necessary to create and operate for-profit and nonprofit startups, nongovernmental organizations, and to work in multinational companies that champion social and environmental objectives while delivering solid returns on investment. We admit a new cohort of 25-30 students each year, approximately half of whom come from abroad. The centerpiece of the GSSE is an intensive summer practicum in which student teams work on ventures domestically and abroad to apply classroom learning in the real world. GSSE Enterprise Teams work on a wide array of projects, including clean energy, irrigation technology, consumer products, clean water supply, organic foods and a host of other ventures. It is not uncommon for GSSE students to continue building these social ventures after graduation. Our Four Guiding Goals: 1. Minimize the harm and suffering caused by disasters by focusing on social vulnerability and human impacts. Our mantra is that no disaster is inevitable, but to mitigate the effects of disaster takes time, intelligence, heart, political will, and economic investment. 2. Emerge as a center of scholarly research in the social impacts of disasters. Scholars affiliated with CDRA have both quantitative and qualitative methodological expertise. Research conducted through CDRA is theoretically informed and rigorous in its design. The work that is produced has strong application to real-world problems, with the potential to affect policies and programs related to disaster preparedness, response, and recovery. CDRA researchers recognize the importance of not only conducting the research, but also highlighting its timely and critically important implications. 3. Train a future generation of hazards and disasters researchers and professionals by mentoring and advising students and helping them find internships that will help launch them into meaningful positions. CDRA seeks to attract graduate students with a strong desire to make valuable contributions to the study of human impacts of disaster. 4. Become a clearinghouse for disaster-related information and resources by communicating research findings, sharing publications and datasets, and publicizing the activities of CDRA staff, partners, and affiliates.
