Owner: Joann Carlson has spent her whole life in the restaurant business. Her passion for food can be traced back through her family’s roots. Her grandparents owned a fish packing company on the wharfs of downtown Newport and her family owned Dry Dock Seafood, one of Newport’s legendary Thames Street restaurants. When they closed the restaurant after 23 years, Joann co-owned and operated Percy’s Bistro. Prior to opening Jo’s American Bistro, Joann worked for Newport Harbor Corporation as a restaurant manager at 22 Bowen’s Wine Bar & Grille. Joann is as comfortable in the dining room as she is in the kitchen. Growing up with the restaurant as a family endeavor, she knows no other way to treat her staff and guests but as family. Visiting Jo’s American Bistro will seem as if you are sitting down to dinner in her home. And there is something to be said for having an Italian mother and grandmother to teach you how to cook and entertain with love and passion. Executive Chef: Matthew Preble is a native of North Kingstown, RI where he grew up on his family’s farm. This is the origin of his passion for the highest quality of fresh, local food. He has a Culinary Arts Degree from Johnson & Wales University and vast knowledge of different types of cuisine. His positions have included Sous Chef at The Chanler and Salvation Café, Executive Sous Chef at The Mooring Seafood Kitchen & Bar and 22 Bowens Wine Bar & Grille, and opened the kitchen at Keenwah. His creativity and use of the finest ingredients are the perfect recipe for a meal you won’t soon forget.

Clarke Cooke House was a historic colonial house and restaurant on Bannister's Wharf at 285 Thames Street in Newport, Rhode Island.HistoryIn 1780, Clarke Cooke, a wealthy Newport sea captain built the house nearby on Thames Street, opposite what is now the Blues Cafe, before eventually moving from Thames Street as it commercialized. In the 1970s David W. Ray purchased the building and moved it over a sixth month period in 1973 to Bannister's Wharf. The second and third floors of the building are original (while the first had been used for various commercial purposes) and these top "floors were jacked up, moved and set on a new foundation, which is now the wharf level dining area." It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, but was removed in 1973 after being relocated.
