The Esquire Tavern is more than just a bar that serves luscious libations and tasty elevated American fare; it’s a scintillating slice of San Antonio’s history. We first opened our doors in 1933 on Repeal Day, a day which celebrated the end of America’s 13-year-long alcohol prohibition. Lauded as the oldest bar in San Antonio -still holding the title of the longest bar in Texas- The Esquire Tavern is a venue of untouchable historic significance and has many remarkable tales to tell. When the Germans came to Texas in the mid-1800s, their main imports were hard work, fun, music, good cooking and beer. Papa Fritz Schilo was no exception. Schilo’s saloon was started in Beeville, Texas in the early 1900’s and in 1914, he moved his family and business to San Antonio on Commerce Street. Prohibition came in 1917 and the saloon closed. That same year, Schilo’s Delicatessen opened at the corner of South Alamo and Worth Streets, with fare much the same as it is today. Mrs. Schilo spent weekends preparing food and special treat from her own recipes. In 1927 Schilo’s moved again to Commerce Street – next door to its present location. Christmas – German style was the best time of the year and Schilo’s shared it with all through their window decorations. With typical German strength, Schilo’s survived the Depression – substantial how lunches became the specialty enhanced by Mama Schilo’s Split Pea Soup. After Papa Fritz passed away in 1935, the business was taken over by his son, Edgar. In 1942, Schilo’s moved to its present location and was operated by the third generation of Schilo. Although the Schilo family is no longer connected with Schilo’s, it is still German Family - owned and operated, with the traditions and good food continuing. Between 1917 and now, a lot has changed – Times – Faces – Places, but always there is Schilo’s….where good times and good food are famous.

We also provide an extensive beverage selection, complete with our trademark Specialty Drinks! In the mid 1940's, Pat O'Brien's Bar propelled when the Hurricane Drink was created. At that time, there was short supply of liquor such as whiskey, bourbon and scotch. There was, however, access to rum coming up the river. Bar owners were forced to buy large quantities of rum, 50 cases or so, in order to purchase other liquor. Through trial and error, they came up with a drink that everyone loved! Pat O'Brien paired it up with a glass shaped like a Hurricane lamp and the drink was perfected! Under the management of George Oechsner Jr., Pat O'Brien's quickly became the most popular bar in New Orleans. The new concept of dueling piano players in the Piano Lounge had everyone dancing in the aisles. The Main Bar was a mainstay for neighborhood friends, and the Patio a perfect place to socialize. Even though the corporation has branched out, the main reason for its success is the fervor New Orleanians have for the place. "Even though millions of people visit Pat O's every year, locals are the reason the doors stay open" says Shelly Oechsner Waguespack, Vice President. "Locals are the heart and soul of what we are all about... Passion for fun and life!

The bakery is an important feature to pay homage to the legacy of the Gunter's bakery within San Antonio. In the evenings, guests may dine in either the Market or in the vibrant bar. The bar features over 25 craft and microbrew beers and 50 wines by the glass, taste or quartino, all suitable for pairing with the intriguing small plates, sandwiches and entrees. The restaurant founded in 1946 by Alfred F. Beyer, sits on land first granted title in 1777 by the King of Spain. The Spanish Colonial period hacienda became the core of the new business. The cedar door and window lintels, the fireplace, and thick rock walls, are still evident inside the building. Casa Rio was the first San Antonio business to open its doors to the River and take advantage of the River's setting. Canoes, gondolas, and paddle boats, evolving into tour and dinner boats, began here and helped create the Riverwalk of today.
