The business of independent motion picture production and distribution – a truly collaborative process – reaches its peak every year at the American Film Market. Over 8,000 industry leaders converge in Santa Monica for eight days of deal-making, screenings, seminars, networking and parties. Participants come from over 80 countries and include acquisition and development executives, agents, attorneys, directors, distributors, festival directors, financiers, film commissioners, producers, writers, the world’s press all those who provide services to the motion picture industry. Founded in 1981, the American Film Market (AFM) quickly became the premiere global marketplace where Hollywood’s decision-makers and trendsetters all gather under one roof. Unlike a film festival, the AFM is a marketplace where production and distribution deals are closed. In just eight days, more than $1 billion in deals will be sealed — on both completed films and those in every stage of development and production — making AFM the must-attend industry event. The AFM transforms Santa Monica. The Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel is converted into a busy marketplace and all 29 screens on the Santa Monica Promenade and the surrounding community become AFM screening rooms. Participants may view more than 500 screenings of 300+ films – 29 new films every two hours – the majority of them world or U.S. premieres. Titles range from big budget blockbusters that will be released by the major studios in the U.S., to lower budget art and genre films recognized at international film festivals, all destined for theaters and television around the world. With 8,000 attendees, 500 screenings, and the industry’s largest Conference series, the American Film Market continues to be the pivotal destination for independent filmmakers and business people from all over the world.

The Camera Obscura Art Lab is a place to learn salsa moves, enhance your blogging skills, design a font, mix a perfume, fuse glass, solder a circuitboard or tile a mosaic table, among many other possibilities! It all happens at 1450 Ocean Avenue in Palisades Park, steps from the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier. This midcentury building houses the iconic Camera Obscura mechanism and offers lovely views of the ocean as well as a multitude of activities, as well as access to great restaurants and easy parking around the corner in the public structures. You might even take a turn on the ferris wheel down on the boardwalk after a class! All arts, crafts and movement classes are for adults, at prices from free to three figures and ranging from two hour events to multiweek workshops. 1450 Ocean Ave sits on the former site of the North Beach Station of the Pacific Electric railway, now Palisades Park, between Broadway and Santa Monica Blvd. Philanthropist Marcellus L. Joslyn gifted the building in 1955 to the city of Santa Monica in memory of his wife. Designed by architect Weldon J. Fulton, it sports exterior walls clad in chunky Palos Verdes stone, glass walls, sloping roofs, and projecting canopies and rafter beams, to create a distinctively midcentury appearance. Fulton also created the swooping font spelling out “Camera Obscura” and camera on tripod logo on the front. Similar features are found at the Montana and Fairview branch libraries and at the Zucky’s building on Wilshire Blvd., also designed by Fulton. The Camera Obscura itself is quite a bit older – it was built by Robert F. Jones, nephew of Santa Monica city founder Senator John P. Jones, in 1898 and was moved up from the Beach.
Santa Monica Civic Auditorium is a multi-purpose convention center at 1855 Main Street in Santa Monica, California, owned by the City of Santa Monica. It was built in 1958 and designed by Welton Becket.ArchitectureThe building was made of reinforced concrete and combined elements of a theater, concert hall, and trade show and convention auditorium. Parabolic pylons supported the exterior grand cantilevered canopy fronting a glass curtain wall and brise soleil, a patterned wall that reduced the effects of the sun's glare.For trade shows, the Civic Auditorium features 11,775ft2, while the stage adds 4,485ft2 more space, for a total of 16,260ft2. The East Wing meeting room adds an additional 4200ft2, while the main lobby features 6,708ft2.The main hall of the Civic is adaptable for not only trade shows, but also sporting events, concerts, meetings, awards shows and other events. As a concert venue it can seat 3,000, as a banquet hall 720 in tables, and as a sports arena it can seat up to 2,500. The most widely touted innovation was the auditorium's main floor, which in a matter of seconds could be tilted by a hydraulic mechanism to form raked seating for theatrical productions or a flat surface for dancing or exhibits. The main floor of the auditorium can thus be raised or lowered to create a raked floor for theatre seating or a level floor for exhibits.

During a hiatus from dance Stephanie Spirovski first discovered the practice of yoga in 2007 while living in Seattle, Washington and due to her strong love for body movement curiosity was sparked. In 2010 Stephanie started her 500 hour teacher training at the Yoga Shala in Portland where she has deepened her practice through Kriya Yoga and the Krishnamacharya lineage. During her training and to this day Stephanie has been given the opportunity to study with prestigious teachers from all around the world, including colleagues of the renowned Tirumalai Krishnamacharya as well as his son TKV Desikachar. Stephanie believes that the breathe is our greatest teacher in our yoga practice and strives to create a calm environment where each student can start comfortably at their own level as they share the personal experience of yoga in a public place. She approaches every class in a gentle and playful manner giving the student room to discover their own being through a breath centered vinyasa practice. Stephanie feels that in every class room setting no matter how old or young a student may be, there is always something new to learn. Stephanie is also certified as a Street Yoga Teacher. When Stephanie is not on the mat she enjoys music, traveling, crafting, dance, drinking tea and laying low with her two cats and dog.
