About twentythreebooks Emily Dickinson said “Tell the truth, but tell it slant.” Poetry is truth told slant. Perhaps this indirection has helped keep poetry on the margins, but the margins is where we all exist, pushed out by power-hungry nefarians, by wars, by ignorance—we are a marginalized people, even the marginalizers (bully does as a bully is done to). twentythreebooks is the latest host at the margin-party. We move from guest to guest (inhabitor to inhabitor) introducing strangers to each other, hoping they hit it off and get along well after the party moves to another location—strangers no longer. The birth of twentythreebooks began in founder Doug Mowbray’s capacity as Assistant Editor at BrickHouse Books, Maryland’s oldest continuously operating small press, founded and operated by Clarinda Harriss, where he had the occasion to review Omar Shapli’s manuscript, The General Is Asked His Opinion and other sad songs 2002–2005, and recommended it for publication immediately. BrickHouse Books’ calendar was set for the year, so Doug posited “What if I publish it myself?” Ms. Harriss gave her blessing, Doug sent a letter to Omar, and thus was launched the venture you are witness to today.

In partnership with faith communities, GEDCO provides affordable housing with supportive services and assists in meeting emergency needs of community residents. This includes housing adults with mental disabilities in the Ascension Homes, nurturing women and men who were homeless at Harford House, Micah House and Shelter Plus Care, and stabilizing neighborhoods through single-family homeownership with GEDCO Homes. We enable seniors to age with dignity at Epiphany House, the Harry and Jeannette Weinberg Senior Housing at the Gallagher Mansion and Stadium Place, and offer educational, wellness, social, nutritional, and recreational opportunities for seniors at the Harford Senior Center and Senior Network of North Baltimore. Most of the 550+ residents living in our programs have incomes less than 30% of the median income in the Baltimore metropolitan area, and all fall under 60% of this mark. GEDCO currently is the only non-profit developer of affordable, large-scale housing projects with supportive services in north Baltimore City. In addition to our housing programs, GEDCO operates CARES (Civic and Religious Emergency Services), a food pantry and emergency financial assistance center located in the back of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. CARES responds to more than 5000 visits annually from community members seeking food, advocacy, and emergency financial assistance for utility bills, eviction prevention and prescriptions. Furthermore, CARES Career Connection expands self-sufficiency opportunities for these individuals and families by focusing on employment options. We address barriers to full employment and provide one-on-one volunteer mentoring that assists program participants in obtaining and maintaining jobs. After a decade of cooperative efforts by seven pastors in the Govans community, GEDCO (Govans Ecumenical Development Corporation) was incorporated in 1991 as a private, non-profit organization with 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. These pastors experienced first hand the growing need for affordable housing with supportive services and emergency food and financial assistance among members of their churches and of the broader community. They created an independent, non-profit corporation in order to broaden the base of community involvement and expedite the development of new projects. GEDCO now has 53 institutional "Member Organizations" including churches, community groups, schools, neighborhood associations, and service organizations throughout north Baltimore. These organizations, no matter their location, can refer their members for GEDCO services.

Eastern High School is a historic all-female, public high school located in then City of Baltimore, Maryland, that was formerly a part of the Baltimore City Public Schools system (established 1829).OverviewThe last of several buildings in its 140-some year history was a three story, "H"-shaped structure, with a main lateral section and four projecting wings. It has a steel and concrete superstructure frame with red brick cladding and carved limestone trim in the Tudor Revival (or Jacobethan)style. One of two historically female public high schools in Baltimore City, the Eastern Female High School (along with "twin sister" Western High) were both established in 1844, a few months apart, as the first of their kind in the nation. E.H.S. was located in several buildings over the years including an earlier landmark Greek Revival styled structure on Aisquith Street off Orleans Street, in East Baltimore's Jonestown/Old Town neighborhood, designed by R. Snowden Andrews and later relocated to the southeast corner of Broadway and East North Avenue. The fourth major building on the newly laid-out "33rd Street Boulevard" in the former Venable Park, laid out as a system of coordinated parks and boulevards along the city's western, northern and eastern sides of stream valleys in the former Baltimore County rural/suburban areas annexed in 1888 and more recently in 1918-1919 (part of a famous 1904 Report and later 1926 revision Plan) by landscape architectural firm of the famed Frederick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York's Central Park in 1858, and Baltimore's Druid Hill Park in the 1860s.
