The most common way to experience the Deep South is to find a street magician and hope he pulls a shiny Louisiana state quarter from your ear. Dorsey"s Locker, in Oakland, presents another option when there are no illusionists handy, great soul food. Drawing on a family tradition that began with the first Dorsey-owned restaurant in 1941, the menu at Dorsey's features steaming platefuls of southern home cooking. Any day of the week, choose from a swimmy selection of seafood, including deep-fried or grilled catfish fillets and prawns. Or try robust helpings of fried chicken, liver and onions, and more. Dorsey's also offers a rotating daily menu; Friday's menu, for example, doles out helpings of smothered steak, chitterlings, barbecue ribs and chicken or links, and gumbo. Most entrees are served nicely neighbored by three sides of your choice. The comfortable, no-frills restaurant welcomes diners to a cozy space where the food speaks for itself. Full-service bar available.

Little or no oxygenation occurs using the cold press method so enzymes, vitamins and minerals stay fresh and potent, even up to 3 days after juice is made. Your body can easily absorb these nutrients without having to break down and digest any pulp or fiber. We use organically farmed and/or locally grown fruits, vegetables and ingredients in everything we make. Organic food is produced by farmers who emphasize the use of renewable resources and the conservation of soil and water to enhance environmental quality for future generations. Chick & Tea (3932 Telegraph Ave., Oakland), a new boba shop in Temescal, is the only place I'm aware of in the East Bay that specializes in an equally iconic Taiwanese street snack: da ji pai, or whole fried chicken cutlets. According to owner Frank Cheng, a desire to do something different from every other shop was the main reason he decided to specialize in what he has dubbed the "G-Pie" ($5.99) — that and the fact that he's a self-described "meat guy." And it's true: There is something deeply satisfying about holding a giant piece of fried chicken in two hands and chowing down on it straight out of the paper bag. (Daintier eaters can ask Cheng to cut the chicken into strips before frying.) Because the chicken is thicker, it's easier for the meat in the center to stay juicy, and Cheng uses several tricks to maximize tenderness and flavor — most notably, he said he massages each piece of chicken three times a day while it's marinating. I loved the craggy, well-spiced crust of Chick & Tea's G-Pie. Mostly, though, I loved how much it made me feel like I was in Taiwan. East Bay Express
Montreal smoke meat is like pastrami and corned beef put on some Barry White popped open a good bottle of wine and made a baby. We hand cure beef brisket for 8 days then smoke it with maple wood (of course) and bake. The brisket comes out with the spice of pastrami and the crumbly texture of corned beef. We will be serving authentic poutine using St Hubert poutine gravy imported from Canada and squeaky cheese curds from Oakdale California. We will also be serving our Uncles Famous Pickles which are homemade Polish dill pickles with a kick, and of course a range of different pop's (Canadian for soda).
We use organic ingredients in our bagels, then roll them by hand and bake in a wood-fired oven. We use the best ingredients we can find and take the utmost pride in the food we make. Hope you enjoy!
