The Mechanics' Institute Library and Chess Room is a historic membership library, cultural event center, and chess club in the Financial District of San Francisco, in the U.S. state of California at 57 Post Street. Founded in 1854 to serve the vocational needs of out-of-work gold miners, the institute today serves readers, writers, downtown employees, students, film lovers, chess players, and others.LibraryThough initially a library dedicated to the mechanical arts, in 1906, the institution merged with the Mercantile Library Association, and dropped its technical focus. The Palace Hotel is a landmark historic hotel in San Francisco, California, located at the SW corner of Market and New Montgomery streets. Also referred to as the \"New\" Palace Hotel to distinguish it from the original 1875 Palace Hotel that it was built to replace, the present structure opened on December 19, 1909 on the site of its razed predecessor although the hotel was closed from January, 1989 to April, 1991 to undergo a two year renovation and seismic retrofit.
