Monkey King is the main superhero from the most popular Chinese fiction novel, “Journey to the West” (西遊記) written by Wu Cheng’en in the late sixteenth century. The story takes place during the Tang dynasty, where a monkey is born from a stone and gains supernatural power through Taoist practices. His powers gave him the capabilities to clone himself and transform himself into different objects. He is a skilled martial artist who can freeze objects, control wind and fire; and can even survive under the deep ocean. Monkey King likes to show off his magical powers to no limit; which caused so much chaos in heaven that Buddha imprisoned him for eternity. Monkey King was later released from his imprisonment on the condition that he protects, Xuanzang, a monk who was going on a journey to retrieve the Buddhist scriptures in order to end suffering to all human race. During their 30,000 miles journey to Buddha’s Western Paradise in India, they encounter demons and monsters at every corner. The mischievous Monkey King was able to defeat all his enemies by playing tricks on them. In return for completing the dangerous mission, Monkey King received forgiveness for his bad behavior and was granted Buddhahood for his service. “Journey to the West” is our favorite childhood story and Monkey King is one of our favorite superheroes. Our parents often use Monkey King as a role model because of his courageousness, cleverness, determination to live a righteous life and the ability to face obstacles with a sense of humor. Monkey King’s journey is also compared to our own family’s obstacles and their voyage to the West for freedom. Like many Chinese during the Second Sino-Japanese War in the late 1930’s, our great grandfathers escaped to Northern Vietnam. When the Vietnam War erupted during the 1970’s, our family escaped the war by enduring a long and perilous journey in a boat through South China Sea to Hong Kong. Once in Hong Kong, they were living in refugee camps provided by the then British government. After one year, our family was offered asylum by the American government. In 1980, our family decided to make beautiful Bay Area their only home. Salty Dog Cafe is the culmination of an idea that sprouted years ago while walking my dogs down at the marina. I kept noticing over and over residents of the marina would have coffee cups from establishments miles away. That is when the idea sparked that the marina needed some sort of coffee and food service and Salty Dog Cafe was born. As a long time resident of Alameda, I have seen first hand the island's ability to support local businesses and nurture a small idea into a thriving business. I took that first step forward putting all my faith in the community to support an idea that bringing something as simple as coffee and good food to area currently void of it, could change the whole atmosphere of this water front property. I haven't looked back since. I am so looking forward to our grand opening in the summer of 2015 and the prospect of intermingling again with the very special folks of Alameda.
Brotzeit Lokal is a Bavarian-inspired restaurant and biergarten with a distinctively Oakland flare. We're located on the Oakland waterfront and feature locally-sourced, house-made menu items alongside a unique German draft beer selection. Brotzeit Lokal was created and built by wife & husband team Krista and Tony Granieri and their long-time friend, partner and chef Lev Delany. Brotzeit Lokal was inspired by the trio's love for the inviting, relaxing and family friendly atmospheres of the beergardens in Germany. We took over the old "Oyster Reef" building in October of 2012. While it had certainly had it's hay-day, it had been a run-down night club in a dilapidated building for several years. It had become a haven for prostitution and drug dealing and was a source of blight and crime in the neighborhood. The previous owners had been evicted, so they stripped and trashed the place. At one point it had even been slated for demolition by The Port of Oakland. We leased the building, quit our jobs and spent 6 months full time working on building our restaurant. We are proud to be a true, Oakland local family business. Built from scratch with our life savings, our own "elbow grease" and with the help of all of our closest friends and family members. We extend the warmest "thank you" to everyone who worked way too hard for way too little in order to make our dream into a place that we can share with our neighbors, friends and families. An especially warm thanks to Robert Legere, who worked harder than anyone and never asked for anything (but cold beer) in return. Cheers!
