Completed in 1982, it serves as the regional headquarters of BellSouth Telecommunications, which does business as AT&T Southeast, and was acquired as part of AT&T's acquisition of BellSouth. BellSouth Corporate headquarters was located in the Campanile building, also in Midtown.BackgroundThe company, then called Southern Bell, originally planned to build the parking deck for the tower one block further east at the corner of Ponce de Leon Avenue and Peachtree Street. This would have required the razing of the historic Fox Theatre which would have been an especially great loss to the city after the downtown Loew's Grand Theatre was destroyed by fire in 1978. Tremendous opposition, protests, fundraising, and petition drives within the community prevented the Fox's demolition. Even Liberace spoke out on behalf of the "Fabulous Fox". In the end, a complicated deal was struck to build the parking deck on an alternate site north of the main tower on West Peachtree Street.

The mission of the Officer Selection Officer (OSO) Atlanta is to find qualified applicants for Officer Candidates School (OCS), guide them through the selection process, and to prepare them for the challenges they will face at OCS. OCS is for ground, aviation and law candidates. The Platoon Leaders Class (PLC) is the option for candidates who have not yet obtained their college degree, but who are currently full-time students. During the summer candidates attend either two 6-week sessions or one 10-week session at OCS. Afterwards the candidate returns to school, finishes their education, and receives their commission upon graduation. Candidates are paid for their time in training and all travel expenses are covered by the government. The Officer Candidates Course (OCC) is the option for candidates who have already obtained their college degree. Candidates attend a 10-week course at OCS, and then immediately commission upon graduation. Time in training is paid and the government covers all travel expenses.
