The Mobile Homestead

4454 Woodward Ave
Detroit, MI 48201

(313) 832-4944

Mobile Homestead is a permanent art work by late artist Mike Kelley located on the grounds of the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. It's both a public sculpture and a private, personal architecture – based on the artist's childhood home on Palmer Road in Westland, a neighborhood which primarily housed workers for the Big Three auto makers: Ford, Chrysler and General Motors. In a largely disinvested city with many abandoned houses and dilapidated buildings, Mobile Homestead enacts a reversal of the 'white flight' that took place in Detroit following the inner city uprisings of the 1960s. It does so at a time when the city is exploring new options of renewal by assessing its singular post-industrial conditions in an attempt to articulate a new model for American cities. The sculpture, which almost exactly replicates the vernacular architecture of working class neighborhoods in the American Midwest, brings the suburbs back into the city, and as it travels – on specific missions – the mobile home performs various kinds of community services, establishing a permanent dialogue with the community that houses it. MOCAD’s Department of Education and Public Engagement programs the ground floor of Mobile Homestead as a community space, as Kelley intended. It is home to projects, events, gatherings, conversations and displays that are created by and for a diverse public, and is intentionally unaffiliated with the Museum’s exhibitions and public programming.

The Friends of Prints, Drawings & Photographs brings together friends, fans, and collectors of art on paper. The group is dedicated to supporting the activities of the Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs and to developing the Detroit Institute of Arts collection in Detroit, Michigan. Each year a schedule of varied educational and social programs is created around the many exhibitions presented by the department and from the museum’s collection of 35,000 prints, drawings, and photographs. Openings, previews, lectures, specialized gallery tours, workshops, and dinners are among regular activities, as well as trips to great art destinations in the United States and visits to artists’ studios and private collections. Proceeds from all our events are channeled into the Forum's Purchase Fund to make significant acquisitions for the DIA collection. Founded in 1966 as The Drawing and Print Club, this auxiliary remains strong with a membership of over 200 individuals. Its first name change to The Graphic Arts Council was adopted in 1988 to reflect and to embrace the collection of photography. Becoming the Forum for Prints, Drawings & Photographs in 2007 truly clarified its interests. To belong to this group requires nothing more than to care for works on paper on any level. Since its inception, the FPDP has supported the commissioning of prints and photographs which are offered for sale exclusively to the membership. Over the last decade, Summer Soirées has become a much anticipated, enjoyable staple which generates great camaraderie and significant funds for major acquisitions of prints, drawings, or photographs for the DIA. Encouraging and stimulating collecting among its members is as important to the PDP mission as building Detroit’s collection. An annually elected Board of Directors drawn from the ranks of the membership administers all the Forum’s programs. We wish to remain a vibrant, creative, and vital part of the art community but we can’t do it without you. Please consider joining today. Call 313-833-9830 for information about any aspects of the FPDP. Like

Construction of the building was commissioned by the newly inc'd Ford Motor Company in 1904. Piquette was Ford's only facility from 1904 to 1910 when they moved to Highland Park. Three very important historical milestones happened at this building during the Piquette era: 1. The Ford Model T (car of the 20th century) was designed and developed at Piquette in October of 1908. The first 12,000 were also produced at Piquette. 2. Ford's version of the assembly line was first developed in July 1908 at Piquettte 3. The Selden Patent was defeated during the Piquette era of which Henry Ford played an important role. The Selden patent was a rudimentary patent on all cars of which all manufactures had to pay a royalty to. When this patent was defeated the automobile business became much more profitable.
