Isis Restaurant and Music Hall Reviews

743 Haywood Rd
Asheville, NC 28806

The original Isis Theatre was built in 1937 and screened its last film in 1957. We, as a family, have restored Isis and made this historic theatre into what is now Kitchen 743 @ Isis Music Hall. We hope to bring back what Isis was originally, a place that brought people together and entertained the community. And with that, a place that has great energy, even better food, local and regional music to get down to and just a good spot for a neighborhood hang. There were a number of Isis Theaters built during the 30s around the country. During the 30s - many folks had a fascination with Greek and Egyptian architecture (thus the birth of the art-deco period.) Isis was an ancient Egyptian goddess. :: Isis was worshipped as the ideal mother and wife as well as the patroness of nature and magic. She was the friend of slaves, sinners, artisans and the downtrodden, but she also listened to the prayers of the wealthy, maidens, aristocrats and rulers. Isis is also known as protector of the dead and goddess of children. We chose to keep the name of the original theater for which the building was originally built. It's historic.

Singer-Songwriter Showcase Thursdays 7pm Odd's Cafe, 800 Haywood Rd, West Asheville, NC No cover charge. (Tip jar, $5 suggested donation.) On Thursday evenings for an hour or two, the lovely West Asheville coffee shop and community space Odd's Cafe becomes a musical coffeehouse / "listening room" for some of Asheville's most fantastic singer-songwriters. Hosted by Brian Claflin - Musician ("Cesspool of Sin", "Going Back to Georgia"). Featuring a different solo (or minimally-accompanied) artist weekly. Opening weeks' performers include Nathaniel Spencer, Millie Palmer, Hannah Kaminer, Brittany Ann Tranbaugh, Doss Church, Lorraine Conard, Matt Townsend, Ashley Heath, Brian Claflin - Musician, and a special Saturday set by "the Stowaway" Eric Stalowy. It's a chance for developing artists to play for an intimate crowd and gain fans without having to wait for late-night open mic slots, for band leaders to offer a special solo acoustic alternative to band gigs at rock clubs, and for acoustic artists with established audiences to have a welcoming room to invite their fan base to, where all proceeds go to the artist. The house does not share tips, musicians take all (but we urge you to kindly support the our generous host venue by making a purchase). Thanks. There aren't many venues in town where small acoustic shows can be held without having to fight the noise of a rowdy bar/pub crowd. We hope to begin filling that void, without disrupting those who have come out to read, study, or socialize. The shape of the space lends itself to having music in the back corner where friends & fans can sit up close, while others can congregate towards the front of the house as usual. Come hungry for savory & sweet treats, thirsty for coffee & tea, and an ear for really great music. www.oddscafe.com
