Coffman Memorial Union is a student union on the Minneapolis campus of the University of Minnesota, United States. Located immediately south of Washington Avenue, it anchors the south end of Northrop Mall and overlooks the Mississippi River. It was designed by Clarence H. Johnston, Jr. and is named for Lotus Coffman, President of the University of Minnesota between 1920 and 1938.Coffman Memorial Union opened in 1940 and has undergone several subsequent renovations. Some of these renovations have been widely criticized, especially in the 1970s when the exterior was significantly altered. The most recent, and most extensive, renovation closed the building between 1999 and 2003. This renovation restored the exterior, thoroughly renovated the interior, and greatly expanded the basement floors, which now include the main University of Minnesota Bookstore, food vendors, offices, lounges, and the glass "Cube" which sits adjacent to Washington Avenue. The building hosts a variety of services including food & dining, the Coffman Union Book store, printing services, administration services, IT Student Lab, and student group services. A majority of the student groups can be found on the second floor, while the lower level offers access to the book store, dining & printing services, and access to lower level parking.Coffman Memorial Union is operated quasi-independently from the University of Minnesota by the Student Unions & Activities Board of Governors. The building is home to the Minnesota Student Association, the Minnesota Programs and Activities Council, the Graduate and Professional Student Assembly, and the campus's main bookstore.

Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church is a church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, adjacent to the University of Minnesota East Bank campus. The church was built in 1915-1917 by a Swedish Lutheran congregation to serve university students. It was designed by Chapman and Magney and built in the Gothic Revival style. The congregation was organized in Minneapolis in 1903 by the Swedish immigrant-dominated Augustana Evangelical Lutheran Church. At the time, Minnesota boasted a large population of Swedish immigrants. In 1905, the state had 126,000 Swedes, of whom 38,000 lived in Minneapolis and Saint Paul. In Minneapolis, there was a concentration of Swedish settlers in the Seven Corners neighborhood, around Washington and Cedar Avenues, on the west bank of the Mississippi River. Grace Church was organized as one of the first English-speaking congregations of the Augustana Synod in Minneapolis. In 1914, the congregation merged with Swedish Evangelical Lutheran Sharon Church of Minneapolis, located on the east bank of the Mississippi. The two congregations, now united under the name Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, decided to sell their individual properties and build a common church near the University of Minnesota and Minnesota College, a school run by the synod. Minnesota College donated land at the corner of Harvard and Delaware Streets, and the church retained the firm of Chapman and Magney to design their new building. The firm was also responsible for designing the Sumner Community Library in 1915 and the Saxe Movie Theater, later the Forum Cafeteria, in 1914. The design was well-received, and construction of the new church building began in late 1915. The first service was held on December 24, 1916, in the basement of the partially completed building. Construction was finished in late 1917, and the church was dedicated on December 9, 1917. However, the congregation had run short on funds for furnishing the interior, so some temporary lighting fixtures and seating were used until the congregation could afford permanent furnishings.

Our Beliefs A college education is expensive enough – your rent shouldn’t be. With the price of higher education continuing to increase year after year, we’ve held steadfast to the belief that quality student housing should be accessible for all. We also believe that housing should empower students, not financially overburden them. This is why we wholeheartedly support the cooperative housing model. And while the trend around campus has been the new construction of “luxury” apartment buildings with sky-high rents, we remain committed to fostering the ideals of cooperative housing and supporting the buildings we manage in a way that enables each co-op to provide quality, affordable housing to students at the U of M and other schools in the area. Check out our FAQs page for more information! Our Mission To develop and maintain quality student-oriented housing communities operating on a nonprofit, democratic basis. Our History From its beginning in 1945 as the Chateau Co-op Dining Club, the nonprofit organization now known as Riverton Community Housing has served many thousands of students of the University of Minnesota and nearby colleges by making the pursuit of their educational goals more accessible. With shifting market conditions and the growing need for affordable housing in the late 1960’s – early 1970’s, the student-run board of directors worked with multiple public and private partners to replace the dining co-op with 127 apartments. Thus the 20-story Chateau Student Housing Cooperative was born; the first students moved in for the start of classes in the fall of 1973. The Chateau was so successful that there has been a waiting list ever since the doors opened. To expand the amount of member-controlled affordable housing, the Chateau board formed a “parent” nonprofit organization. Four more housing cooperatives and a rental townhome community have been added since 1995, putting the current total number of housing units at 483. Riverton is now growing in ways the original members of the Chateau board could only dream about and will continue to provide quality, affordable, democratic student housing for another 40 years and beyond!

Malcolm Willey House

The Malcolm Willey House is located in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States. It was designed by the American architect Frank Lloyd Wright, and built in 1934. Wright named the house "Gardenwall".Malcolm Willey was an administrator at the University of Minnesota. In June 1932, his wife Nancy Willey sent a letter to Wright asking if he would be able to provide them a "creation of art" for a budget of "about $8,000." The current design is the second design that Wright conceived for the Willeys, since the first design proved too costly for the family. The home ended up a modest 1200sqft at a cost of $10,000. The Willeys sold the home in 1963 to a family that later sold it to a Wright aficionado who only sporadically occupied the home; when the current owners purchased the home in 2002 it was in need of major restoration which is currently ongoing. The Willey House is primarily built of red brick and cypress. Except for the red linoleum in the kitchen, the rooms on the main floor are floored with mortared brick pavers. A major design feature is the 30-60-90 triangle which shapes the terrace, the skylights, and two clerestory windows in the living room. The house is arranged so that the living room and dining room form a single space: the kitchen was separated from them by plate glass and a group of shelves. This gave a clear view from the kitchen to the living and dining area, allowing Mrs. Willey to watch the rest of the house while in the kitchen. This was an important step away from the historic precedent of compartmentalizing the functions of the house into separate rooms. The house can be considered a bridge between Wright's earlier Prairie School style houses, and his later Usonian style houses, since it incorporates certain elements from both styles.
