Mt. Sinai Baptist Church of Atlanta, GA has a rich history. The church’s roots reach back to 1914 when a small group of people from the St. Luke Baptist Church had a vision to organize another church in their neighborhood. Reverend A.C. Rucker was the first pastor and helped usher in the first worship service in their first place, a junk shop on Ellis Street. During the summer of 1914, Reverend Rucker had a fatal accident while conducting revival in another city. The members mourned his passing but soon called the Reverend C. Dillard to serve as the second pastor of the church. He served for twelve months. From 1915-192, the following ministers served as Senior Pastor: the Reverend H.L. Jones, the Reverend Martin, the Reverend A.Z. Wadley, the Reverend C.J. Gresham, and the Reverend B.J. Johnson, Sr. In1917 the congregation bought a three-room house on Butler Street and remodeled it into a church. The first choir consisted of a small group of girls from the ages of eleven and twelve years old with Anna Lee McGhee as the pianist. From 1922 until 1931, the Reverend C.W. Warren served as pastor. Under his leadership the church made great progress which included the purchase of a larger building in the summer of 1927 on Houston Street near Northeast Boulevard. In 1924 the first Mothers Board was organized. In the early months of 1932, the Reverend W.F. Paschal was called where he served for four years. During the years of the Great Depression, the church relocated back to Butler Street. In the latter part of 1936, the church lost their property. As a result, many of the members were discouraged and united with new church homes leaving a few courageous members at Mt. Sinai. During this time, the Mothers Board went from house to house on the 2nd and 4th Sundays holding meetings. Over time other members joined the group praying for God to send them a Good Shepherd to lead them. Over an 8 month period, the members decided to hold services every Sunday in the homes of one of the members, which were overseen by either the Reverend H.M. Smith or the Reverend A. Bell. In September 1937, the congregation begin renting a store front building at the corner of Fort and Cain Streets. In October 1937, the Rev. H.M. Smith was called to be the pastor. The Reverend H.M. Smith gathered together a small courageous group of members who were determined to buy land so they could build a church. After months of hard work they were able to purchase land from Mr. Edmond Jones at 177 Butler Street. In 1943, they purchased a home next to the church and in 1944 a larger church was erected. The congregation acquired three more properties in the same area which were later sold to the City of Atlanta to make way for the expressway. They purchased the property that the church is currently located at 422 Merritts Ave. from Mr. L.D. Milton, a prominent banker. The contractor of the building was Mr. Thomas Peace. The Mt. Sinai Church family moved into their building on December 18, 1955 and were able to clear the mortgage in September 1963. In November 1963, a large mansion was purchased from Mr. and Mrs. L.C. Milton and was used as the Educational Building. In July 1978, a remodeling and expansion project began at 422 Merritts Ave and was completed in May 1979. The Reverend H.M. Smith was a great leader and served the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church for 66 years. He retired in 1992 and the Reverend Sampson was called to pastor the church. In 2002, the church decided to search for another pastor and went through an almost 2 year process to find another one. In September 2013, after an intense search process, the church called the Rev. Greer as the pastor. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the leadership decided to go in a different direction. In February, the church called the Rev. Dr. D.E. Jackson to serve as Senior Pastor. In March 2014, the Mt. Sinai Baptist Church celebrated 100 years of service and dedication to the Old Fourth Ward Community of Atlanta, Georgia.
