United Way of Asheville and Buncombe County focuses on reducing the impact of poverty on the lives of families and communities by anchoring all our work around the issues of Education, Income and Health, using 4 key strategies to make change possible: • Middle School Success - anchored support for middle school students, their families and their communities. With our partners, we are building hubs of support in three pilot schools: Enka, Erwin and Asheville Middle. (Our goal is to be in all middle schools by 2020.) • NC 2-1-1 connects people to the health and human services they need. This is a free service, for speakers of all languages, and is available 24/7/365. • Hands On Asheville-Buncombe mobilizes the power of volunteers to support the efforts of our local nonprofit community and our own initiatives. • Education, Income and Health Grants to Nonprofit Programs. Last year we distributed more than 2.2 million dollars in funding for area programs providing services for everyone, from infants to elders, across our area. We want to make our community a better place to live for ALL of our residents. By partnering with local nonprofits, area businesses, government, volunteers and subject matter experts, and by mobilizing our community to take action through giving, advocating and volunteering, we are able to focus on solving key issues in our community.
Founded in 1969 by eight Buncombe County churches, ABCCM is now a cooperative ministry of 271 congregations and over 3600 volunteers responding to the needs of our community through different caring ministries. • Crisis Ministry has four locations around the county providing emergency assistance to individuals and families such as food, clothing, furniture and financial assistance for heat, utilities and rent/mortgage, etc. • Homeless Ministry has two transitional housing facilities. Our men are at the Veterans Restoration Quarters which offers 235 beds in a nationally recognized program. Our women and children (including veterans) are at Steadfast House offering transitional housing for 29 single women and up to 7 moms with children with an average daily occupancy of 43. • Medical Ministry is a Free Clinic for the uninsured in Buncombe County. We offer medical services for acute and essential primary care; provide dental services through extractions, cleanings, and fillings; and, our licensed pharmacy distributes over one million dollars in prescriptions each year. • Jail Ministry provides inmates with new meaning and direction through pastoral counseling, Bible studies, and educational materials. • Veterans Employment & Training Services (VETS) and Green Jobs assist with skills assessment, training, job placement and coaching for those seeking new career level jobs to break the bonds of homelessness and poverty. • The ABCCM Circles Campaign aids families in transitioning out of poverty by mentoring them with a network of volunteers and cultural education. ABCCM is a key non-profit organization addressing poverty, hunger, the incarcerated, homelessness and access to health care for the uninsured in Buncombe County. ABCCM creates opportunities for churches, businesses, individuals and civic groups to restore the dignity of our neighbors in need through contributions of food, clothing, and money as well as time and talent. Through dedicated volunteers and generous supporters, thousands of needy families and individuals are shown compassion and given hope each year.

MountainTrue champions resilient forests, clean waters and healthy communities in Western North Carolina.
We founded The Animal Rescue of Western North Carolina (TARWNC) to be an outlet and networking resource for all humane organizations in WNC. It doesn't matter if the organization is public or private. Our goal is to save adoptable cats and dogs from euthanasia. Sadly, there are healthy and friendly pets not finding homes primarily because the shelters get full and there isn't enough room to house them long enough to be placed. The shelters are doing the best they can to save these animals. Unfortunately, they don't have the resources to do what needs to be done. To save these pets they need outside help. This is where we come in. We are not in competition with anyone and we do not have a shelter. So, what do we do? We will accept immediate ownership of the pet in need from the shelter freeing up their kennel space and cages to accept more intake. Once the pet enters our system we take complete responsibility (financial, medical, fostering him/her and finding him/her a forever home.) The pet will receive any needed medical care or treatment from our vet and be spayed or neutered. Using our network of weekly adoption events and other sources, attempts to find a permanent home will begin immediately. The pet's profile will be listed on TARWNC.com, TARWNC Facebook page, Petfinder, Rescue Me and numerous other online websites. Until a permanent home is found, the pet will attend special adoption events with our team of dedicated caregivers and volunteers. We can't stress this enough: Our success will depend on cultivating a large and extensive network of quality foster homes. We are building this network as fast as possible, but it is going to be a challenge. We know it can be done! These dogs and cats need our help. Please consider opening your home and your heart to an animal in need by becoming a foster. We will be there every step of the way to provide advice, support, food and anything else a TARWNC pet or foster family needs! How can you help if you can't foster a pet? VOLUNTEER WITH US. There are many opportunities available, especially helping when we go to adoption events. The events are fun and effective ways of finding forever homes for our pets. If you can't foster or volunteer then please consider making a FINANCIAL CONTRIBUTION to us. We are a fully recognized IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization. Your donation is tax-deductible. We will use all contributions wisely. Donations equal saved lives. KEEP IN MIND! DONATIONS ARE NOT JUST MONEY! We also crates, portable kennels and carriers, towels and blankets, good dog and cat beds, collars, leashes, harnesses, food and water bowels, dog and cat toys, food and treats and most any other dog or cat item. These types of donations are tax-deductible as well! We also have Secondary Mission! 1. We will educate the public about and support all groups seeking to educate the community about the humane and property treatment of animals. We will support all efforts to prevent cruelty to animals. 2. We will strive to educate our community about the importance of spaying and neutering pets to reduce the pet population. Spaying and neutering of pets is the best way to dramatically reduce the number of animals entering area shelters. 3. We will assist rescue groups and shelters with grant writing, social media marketing, fundraising, social enterprise development for nonprofit funding and in any other way possible.

ALAS was founded in 2005 by a group of Latino leaders interested in helping the Latino communities of Western North Carolina be a part of the fabric, history, and life experiences of this community. It officially incorporated as a 501(c)3 in 2008 and has since played an active role in Latino events across Western North Carolina. From 2007-2013 (6 years), ALAS was the lead organization supporting the annual Fiesta Latina festival held at the WNC Agricultural Center and in Downtown Asheville bringing thousands of people together to celebrate Latino culture. Every year since then ALAS has gifted $1,000 scholarships to undocumented Latino students at A-B Tech. Improving access to education for Latino youth through the scholarship to A-B Tech is one of several ways that we are working together as Latino/a community leaders to develop the strong Latino leaders of tomorrow. Along with eliminating barriers to education, ALAS is providing trainings on different topics for board readiness that are open to the community. ALAS is also partnering with Hispanics in Philanthropy to build capacity of our own board of directors and train other Latino leaders. At ALAS, we believe that Asheville needs more Latino@ men and women in leadership positions to represent the changing face of our community. Yet, there has never been a Latino Councilperson, County Commissioner, or even School Board Member. We need business and nonprofit leaders, elected officials, and community leaders who understand the unique needs of our vibrant and diverse Latino communities. What do we mean by this, specifically? - Understanding the unique issues of “mixed status” families with different immigration statuses within the same family. - Leading from a people-centered perspective that promotes collaboration. - Awareness of the numerous countries, languages, and customs that comprise the Latino experience.
