Dumplings. Life. One moment you've got a plate full of fresh, hot dumplings - next thing you know they're all gone, and you're left wondering where everything went. Here at Mortal Dumpling, however, we believe that if you don't attempt the sisyphean task of eating your fill of dumplings, you've given up on life. We focus on Asian speciality foods: particularly on all types of dumplings, from Chinese dim sum to Japanese mochi. Because it is the labor and technique of making these foods that makes them so special, rather than the use of expensive or rare ingredients, these foods play an important role in the lives of people all across Asia. The traditions of making them are often passed down in the home, rather than professionally, in restaurants. They play a large role in daily cuisines, as well as often being a big part of holiday meal traditions.
UCSC Dining is a self-operated food service department here at the University of California, Santa Cruz. We are the 33rd largest food service operation in the nation, and the largest student employer on campus. We work to nourish the campus community so that all Banana Slugs can thrive! UCSC’s location on the Monterey Bay offers more than just magnificent views and unique educational opportunities, it offers an array of seasonal, local foods. This region grows some of the most amazing produce, which our chefs incorporate into the menus at the dining halls and cafés on campus. Our online comment card is available at http://diningcomment.ucsc.edu/
During Santa Cruz Restaurant Week, participating restaurants throughout Santa Cruz County will offer a fixed-price, three-course menu for $25 or $35. Each menu includes three options for each course: appetizer, entrée and dessert. Since 2010, this event has highlighted the wonderful dining experiences offered in Santa Cruz County, and encourages locals to try and new restaurant or rediscover a tried and true favorite. No passes or tickets necessary. View menus online at SantaCruzRestaurantWeek.com and in the October 12 issue of Good Times—and don’t forget to make a reservation!
Our Coffee Great coffee starts with great farmers. That’s why we buy the freshest, most delicious coffees in season from farms, co-ops, and mills around the world. There’s a lot that goes into growing delicious coffee: high elevation, quality varietals, selective harvesting, skillful milling, and more. We buy only the best of the best and usually in very small lots, to ensure that our green coffee is as fresh as it can be when it arrives at our roasting works. Our Roasting There is a venerable tradition to coffee roasting in America. We humbly embrace that tradition. For 25 years, rather than follow the latest fads, whether they be ultra-dark or über-light coffees, we have, day in and day out, roasted the coffee that we want to drink. Our roast profiles tend to the middle of the color spectrum (very early into second crack, for you home roasters out there), where a caramelly sweetness manifests. We generally eschew the carbon that develops in very dark roast profiles, and the sour acid notes that remain in coffees in which the roast has been stopped prior to second crack. We roast our coffees 5-6 days a week in small batches on a very nice, fire engine red, quarter-bag drum roaster named Gabriel-Mathieu de Clieu, although he prefers to be called Francois. We present each of our coffees roasted to the apex of its flavor. And while each coffee we roast has a defined and distinctive terroir that we highlight with our roasting, at its core, roasting coffee is about caramelizing sugars. So that's what we do. Really well. You're gonna like this stuff. Our Bags We offer the freshest, most delicious coffee you can buy, anywhere. We hand pack every bag (and always add an extra bit to make it a Roasters 3/4 lb), and deliver them fresh to our stores. You’ll always find both a harvest and roast date on them. Look for that roast date and rummage around till you find the coffee that was roasted this morning. It's most likely on that shelf :-)
Awe Sum Organics is a company with a long history, beginning with a passion for organically grown produce. David first started selling organic produce from his large organic garden in 1973, delivering to Santa Cruz and the San Francisco Bay area to natural food stores and co-ops. The business took off when David also started delivering organic produce from other local farmers on his route to organic produce distributors. In 1985, David started Farmers Fruit Express with a unique approach to marketing organic produce in the US and Canada. His idea was to complement locally and domestically grown organic produce in the off-seasons with imported organic produce from south of the border and the southern hemisphere. Eventually David changed the name to Awe Sum Organics and for over 26 years, the company has been providing large volumes of high quality organic fruit to the US and Canada ensuring a fresh, bountiful year-round supply.
I love desserts and I especially love ice cream. But I want the very best, made from the finest, freshest, local organic ingredients and handcrafted in small batches, inspired by quality, mouth-watering recipes. And like you, I love sharing a scoop of ice cream with friends and family. I know I’m not alone in feeling this way. And that’s why Mission Hill Creamery exists. Simply put, I'm obsessed. Many years ago I made a pilgrimage to France to study the culinary arts and savor some of the best ice cream in the world. Since then I’ve focused on quality, creativity and passion in handcrafting new desserts. In 2010, it all led to a first for Santa Cruz: handcrafted ice cream made from organic ingredients, available in both a community-focused shop as well as in Monterey Bay and San Francisco Bay area grocery stores. At Mission Hill Creamery, we won’t ever use chemicals or source our ingredients from nameless and faceless corporate farms. We don’t like those things and we don’t think you do, either. We use real ingredients to handcraft tantalizing treats that deliver smiles, bring people together and make you want more. Enjoy! –Dave Kumec, Chef/Owner
