With a history dating as far back as the 1800’s when the building belonged to The Chicago Illuminating Company, a predecessor of ComEd, the space boasts an urban, contemporary flair and reflects the resurgence of the South Loop neighborhood. Operated under the direction of Marta Michulka since 2004, the venue is noted for premier events including corporate and social, galas, weddings, product launches and film shoots. 19 East is now owned and managed by Food For Thought, Chicago's premium catering company. Marta Michulka will continue to operate the property and venue immediately adjacent at 2110 South Wabash Avenue. It will be marketed under the name of the Chicago Illuminating Company. “I look forward to working with Food For Thought to leverage special event opportunities that showcase the unique qualities of both venues,” said Michulka. Nancy Sharp, Food For Thought’s Chief Executive Officer, notes that the acquisition was a natural choice given the resurgence of the city’s Cultural Mile. “South Michigan Avenue has seen an explosion of growth in civic, retail, cultural and business development,” says Sharp. “What were once traditional manufacturing buildings, are now hosting the finest events in the city. The Research House for Asian Art (RHAA) affords opportunities for emerging local and international artists to show their work. RFAA also organizes local and international symposiums in which the issues of contemporary art theory and criticism are discussed. The MWSSF was created in 2014 by founders Lou Sandoval and Jack Buoscio out of a passion for expanding the on-the-water experience for our youth. It is not only part of my business mission, but it is also part of our way of giving back. I’ve been very blessed to have been given the opportunity to live a life on the water and help many adults achieve that dream. We have known that this is not enough for quite some time. Sailing can be coupled with the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) principles and shared with the many children of Chicago regardless of their background in a nurturing and inclusive environment that fosters applied learning principles. Lou and Jack have been huge believers that one of the best and most unkept secrets in Chicago is her magnificent coastline. A feature that in spite of being the largest public access lakefront is foreign to many of the children in our neighborhoods. The Midwest Science and Sailing Foundation is our way to bring that vision to Chicago and beyond. The formation of the Midwest Science and Sailing Foundation and independent 501 C3 non-profit organization whose purpose is to apply Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in a marine setting. Our goal will be to help our young people learn about applied earth and physical sciences with Chicago’s Lakefront as their ‘Science lab’. We will seek to expand the US Sailing REACH Program, by training educators in the applied delivery of STEM.
