Assumption Church is a Roman Catholic parish located in the River North area of Chicago. Founded in 1881 to minister to the needs of Italian immigrants who had settled in the area, Assumption now serves a diverse community of neighborhood residents, downtown workers, historic parishioners, tourists, and intentional parishioners from all over the Chicago area who have come to appreciate our beautiful worship space, friendly atmosphere, and uplifting liturgies. From the beginning Assumption has been staffed by the Order of Friar Servants of Mary, a religious community founded in Italy in the thirteenth century. The title "Assumption" refers to the belief that Mary, the mother of Jesus and mother of God, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory at the end of her earthly life. The large stained glass window above the altar commemorates this event. It is patterned after a number of famous paintings including El Greco's The Assumption of the Virgin which is part of the collection at the Art Institute of Chicago. Mass Times: Daily: 7 am & 12:10 pm Saturday: 7:30 am & 5 pm (for Sunday) Sunday: 7:30 am, 9:00 am, 10:30 am, 12:15 pm, & 5:00 pm

The virtual home of the Episcopal Cathedral in Chicago for our friends, neighbors, visitors, and the people of St. James! Our congregation is growing ever more diverse in age, race, ethnicity, and background, drawing members from our downtown neighborhood, across the city, and from Chicago suburbs. Our diversity also extends to our worship, which balances traditional liturgy with progressive, theologically-grounded preaching that aims to be both welcoming and spiritually transformative. St. James is committed to caring for the members of its vibrant congregation and making God’s presence known in all of the communities in which we live and to reaching out to those in need. We are especially focused on ministering to those broken by life’s circumstances and on ending the violence that endangers so many of our city’s youth. As the cathedral of the Episcopal Bishop of Chicago, the Rt. Rev. Jeffrey D. Lee, St. James is the site of diocesan wide events and celebrations, but it is also a parish of committed congregants with a deep love for this particular community. Through the arts, music, and social justice activities we offer a variety of ways to become involved in our community, whether you are a committed follower of Christ, an occasional visitor who appreciates our programming, or fall somewhere in between.
