YFX is new to Detroit, but not to the world. Its leaders have been trained in ancient traditions of the arts ranging from comedia del arte to circus, from mime to dance, yet what they bring to the stage is a new fusion of life, a new expression of theatre unique to Detroit! YFX is dedicated to the belief that like the mythical phoenix, Detroit too can rise out of the ashes in new birth. The work of YFX is to participate in the theatrical voice of that uprising.
Detroit Area Agency on Aging DAAA, whose mission is to promote healthy aging and enhance the quality of life for older adults, is a private nonprofit agency established in 1980. DAAA serves approximately 60,000 older adults age 60 and over and caregivers residing in the City of Detroit and metropolitan areas including the five Grosse Pointes, Hamtramck, Harper Woods and Highland Park annually. DAAA's services include Community Access, Wellness Services, Healthy Aging and Nutrition Services feeding about 6,000 homebound and disabled adults daily through the Detroit Meals on Wheels program, Care Management Services for homebound seniors, the Mature Workers Program for low-income individuals age 55 or older, the Medicaid and Medicare Assistance Program, Outreach Services, and the Senior Solution on WCHB AM 1200 every Saturday at 10 a.m. The organization is located at 1333 Brewery Park in Detroit. Every year, Program Director and co-founder Joel "fluent" Greene along with Detroit based Poets, MC's, Writers, and DJ's visit schools and deliver unique outreach and performance opportunities to students in the city. After the outreach ends, select students receive the opportunity to perform at the Music Hall immediately before a National/International act takes the stage. Mosaic's mission is to empower young people to maximize their potential through professional performing arts training and the creation of theatrical and musical art that engages, transforms and inspires. Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit, founded by Rick Sperling in 1992, was born out of a need to fill the gaps in arts education in metro Detroit schools while providing an artistic home for young actors, singers, and stage technicians. Serving only 25 young artists without any budget or home in its inaugural year, Mosaic Youth Theatre of Detroit is now recognized as a highly regarded cultural treasure for the city of Detroit and southeast Michigan. Mosaic's national and international touring performances bring recognition to Detroit as a center for arts and culture and promote a positive image of metro Detroit area youth. As Mosaic has grown, Sperling and his staff have observed that participation in the program was yielding significant youth development outcomes. In particular, Mosaic staff saw that their insistence on high expectations, active participation and total acceptance of each individual had led to an extraordinary percentage of Mosaic alumni not only graduating from high school, but attending college. Even though Mosaic students are disproportionately minority and from low-income families, 95% of Mosaic's Youth Ensemble members graduate from high school and go on to college, which is dramatically above the national average for young people of similar backgrounds. This is a shining testament to the success of the Mosaic Model. Mosaic is not only creating Detroit's future artists, but future doctors, lawyers, teachers and community activists. Each year more than 165 youth from over 50 different schools benefit from involvement in Mosaic's Youth Ensemble and Intermediate Training Programs. An additional 1000 youth participate in Mosaic's First Stage programs within schools and community centers throughout metro Detroit. Through these training programs, Mosaic is developing talented young artists and new, diverse audiences for the performing arts.
When the 20 year old Arts League of Michigan (ALM) moved into its new home in July of 2009, it was a victory after a 4-year effort. The ALM no longer had to hold arts activities in scattered Metro Detroit venues-it had its own. The new home is a 19th century building formerly known as the Harmonie Club, in what is now, Paradise Valley. It was re-named the Virgil H. Carr Cultural Arts Center. The public was welcomed to a fall gala. By that time, the ALM programs were up and running. At the heart of ALM are the arts classes for youngsters ages 7 to 18 in creative writing, dance, theater, photography and especially jazz and visual arts. They have been identifiers of the ALM community-focused arts mission since 1991. That recently expanded with the addition of arts classes for adults. To date, add a succession of art exhibitions, celebrity concerts and master classes, art fairs, artists who use free space in which to create, literary and musical entertainment in Beatrice Buck Park, the new gift shop, plus rentals by the public for private affairs ranging from baby showers to fashion shows to corporate parties, seminars/workshops, weddings and more, and you have the active, stimulating, community-friendly center of arts and culture that the Carr Center is today.

Y Arts is the arts and humanities branch of the YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit. We offer a wide variety of arts programs to youth and adults all over Metro Detroit. Programming is made possible by support from The Kresge Foundation, The Erb Family Foundation, MCACA, and NEA.
