The Packer Collegiate Institute is an independent college preparatory school for students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12. Formerly the Brooklyn Female Academy, Packer has been located at 170 Joralemon Street in the historic district of Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City since its founding in 1845.HistoryIn Brooklyn Heights in 1845, a committee of landowners and merchants interested in improving the education of girls raised funds for a new school, which they called the Brooklyn Female Academy, and which they located on Joralemon Street. Although the school was successful, both financially and educationally, with steadily increasing enrollment, on January 1, 1853 the building caught fire and burned to the ground. The Academy received an offer from Harriet Putnam Packer, the widow of William S. Packer, to give $65,000 towards rebuilding the school if it were named after her late husband; this would be the largest gift ever made for the education of girls. The new building was designed by the Minard Lafever, a noted designer of Brooklyn churches, and opened in November 1854. The chapel is notable for having stained-glass Tiffany windows. After the Episcopal parish of St. Ann's, whose James Renwick-designed church at Livingston and Clinton street was around the corner from the school, moved into the abandoned Holy Trinity Church on Montague Street - also designed by Minard Lefever - in 1969, the church was sold to the school. A modernist connecting building, including a glass atrium which can be seen from Livingston Street, was added in 2003, designed by Hugh Hardy of H3 Collaborative Architecture.

Plymouth Church is a historic church located at 57 Orange Street between Henry and Hicks Streets in the Brooklyn Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York City; the Church House has the address 75 Hicks Street. The church was built in 1849–50 and was designed by Joseph C. Wells. Under the leadership of its first minister, Henry Ward Beecher, it became the foremost center of anti-slavery sentiment in the mid-19th century. It has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1961, and has been a National Historic Landmark since 1966. It is part of the Brooklyn Heights Historic District, created by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1965.The church is a member of the National Association of Congregational Christian Churches.HistoryPlymouth Church was founded in 1847 by 21 transplanted New Englanders, who were part of a circle centered around the wealthy evangelical merchants Arthur and Lewis Tappan. Among them were noted businessmen such as Henry C. Bowen, John Tasker Howard, David Hale, and Seth Hunt. It was the third Congregationalist church to be organized in Brooklyn - then a separate city from New York. The site where the church building would be located was purchased from the First Presbyterian Church, which had been worshipping there since 1822, but which needed more space. It moved to a new site on Henry Street, a few blocks away.

Meyer London was born in Kalvarija, Lithuania (then part of the Russian Empire) on December 29, 1871. Meyer's father, Efraim London, was a former Talmudic scholar who had become politically revolutionary and philosophically agnostic, while his mother had remained a devotee of Judaism.[1] His father had established himself as a grain merchant in Zenkov, a small town located in Poltava province of the Ukraine, but his financial situation was poor and in 1888 his father emigrated with Meyer's younger brother to the United States, leaving Meyer behind. Meyer attended Cheder, a traditional Jewish primary school in which he learned Hebrew, before entering Russian-language schools to begin his secular education.[2] In 1891, when Meyer was 20, the family decided to follow his father to America so Meyer terminated his studies and departed for New York City,[2] taking up residence in the city's largely Jewish Lower East Side. In America, Meyer's father had become a commercial printer, doing jobs in the Yiddish, Russian, and English languages and publishing his own radical weekly called Morgenstern.[3] Efraim London's shop was a hub of activity, bringing together Jewish radical intellectuals from throughout the city, many of whom met and influenced the printer's son with their ideas.[3] Meyer earned money as a tutor, taking on pupils at irregular hours and teaching literature and other topics. He later obtained a job as a librarian, a position which allowed him sufficient time to read about history and politics and to study law in his free time.[3] Meyer also frequented radical meetings, gradually developing proficiency as a public speaker and participant in public debates.[4] In 1896, London was accepted to the law school of New York University, attending most of his classes at night.[4] He completed the program and was admitted to the New York state bar in 1898,[4] becoming a labor lawyer, taking on cases which fought injunctions or defending the rights of tenants against the transgressions of landlords. London did not handle criminal cases, but rather limited himself to matter of civil law.[5]

When we established Make-up Designory (MUD) in 1997, we shared a desire to create a place for higher learning in the field of make-up education. We wanted to create a place that supported the needs of the makeup industry. We also wanted to put our students first. MUD began in a two-classroom, 800 square-foot location in Toluca Lake, California. We started out offering courses in beauty make-up, character make-up and special make-up effects. After 3 years, we moved to cozy downtown Burbank and opened up a 5-classroom school complete with administrative offices, student store and photography studio. Today the school and store are still located in the same place, but we have moved the administrative offices next door to make room for 3 additional classrooms, a library and student lounge. We still offer courses in beauty, character and special make-up effects, and have added courses in hairstyling, airbrushing, portfolio development, some for non-professionals too! We also have a 10,000 square foot warehouse and distribution center in Valencia, CA that also houses our Corporate Headquarters. Not only did we expand locally, we expanded nationally. In 2005 we opened our East Coast branch in New York City. Our 4 classroom, office, and store loft space on a second floor in SoHo eventually grew to be 6 classrooms, separate offices plus a ground-level access retail space. 9 years later, we were again in need of even more space so we moved the school to the Financial District. Our current location occupies the entire 15th floor of the historic, 21- story American Express building and offers 9, classrooms, administrative offices, and a student store. And there’s more still to come! MUD is constantly expanding its reach with partner schools and MUD STUDIO locations from Asia to Europe and San Diego, CA to Giant Springs, MT. We are bringing our vision of excellence in make-up education to the world! Have we come a long way since Toluca Lake? Sure. Yet our founding philosophy still guides everything we do.

Manhattan Scholarium is a school for people who want to learn socially, collaboratively, faster, and better. Founder and teacher Jennifer Dziura has perfect scores on the GRE, SAT, and many other tests. For fun, she co-hosts the Williamsburg Spelling Bee in Brooklyn. But nearly a decade ago, she realized that not everyone views academics - and tests - as fun and games. Since then, she's been on a mission not just to help others beat tests, but to help others beat test stress, and move forward with their academic careers with positivity and confidence. Jennifer has taught for the Princeton Review, and then for a Korean-American study academy, and then for Manhattan GMAT and later Manhattan GRE (now Manhattan Prep, owned by Kaplan), where she developed the first-ever GRE curriculum, and wrote or contributed to four books and two sets of GRE flashcards, all of which can be found at Barnes and Noble and on Amazon. After seeing time and time again that the lecture-based format and "playing school" wasn't working for struggling students, she went off on her own on January 1st, 2014, to found Manhattan Scholarium - a place where learning just works better. Every summer, students lose as much as 2 ½ to 3 ½ months of what they learned the year before. Come September, teachers spend up to 6 weeks re-teaching the materials that students have forgotten. This “summer slide” disproportionately affects children living in low-income neighborhoods, and research has shown that ⅔ of the academic achievement gap can be attributed to unequal access to summer learning opportunities. The traditional summer school model only aims to serves students who are already failing, leaving behind the millions more that still need help. Consequently, students perceive summer school as a punishment, creating an environment where students are not excited to learn and rarely even show up. Simply put: it is broken.
