Dr. Ryder is a physician providing health care for common foot and ankle problems. After completing nine years of medical school and specialty training, Dr. Ryder has practiced podiatry since 2000. Dr. Ryder obtained her pre-medical degree from Wheeling Jesuit University in Wheeling, West Virginia. She completed her podiatry-medical schooling at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine in Cleveland and completed her residency training at Brea Community Hospital and White Memorial Medical Center in Southern California. She is board-certified by the American Board of Podiatric Orthopedics and Primary Podiatric Medicine and has been chosen by her peers as the Secretary/Treasurer of the South Dakota Podiatric Medical Association. How can Dr. Ryder help you? Whenever possible, Dr. Ryder emphasizes non –surgical care. Some of the common problems she treats are: Heel Pain Flat Feet High Arches Ingrown toenails Warts Corns and Calluses Foot Ulcers Toenail problems Foot and Ankle Injury Conservative Care for Bunions and Hammertoes Diabetic foot Care and exams Diabetic Shoes Skin problems Arthritis Workman’s Compensation (with approval) Foot Pain Orthotics (specialized foot inserts) She welcomes both adults and children patients and is accepting new patients. Most insurances are accepted, including Medicare and Medicaid. Why is foot care so important? The foot contains 26 bones, 19 muscles and about 30 joints! Studies show that people typically take 5,000 – 18,000 steps a day on their feet and over 2/3 of our entire lives are spent in footwear. Healthy feet are critical to a good quality of life and we often don’t recognize problems until pain or other symptoms limit our ability to function in daily life. Improper management of foot problems can affect the whole body. For example, foot pain can limit one’s ability to exercise, thus affecting heart and lung health. Diabetic foot care is especially important because infections can spread quickly through the body producing serious illness. Additionally back, knee and hip pain are sometimes caused by improper foot structure, alignment and function. Some foot problems like warts and fungus can be transferred from one person to another. Sometimes serious health conditions will present symptoms first in the foot or leg, making the podiatrist a key member of the medical team. Having been an N.A.I.A./N.C.A.A. soccer player in college and having competed recently in four triathlons, Dr. Ryder is well-acquainted with the needs of athletes as well. Dr. Ryder will take the time to listen as you describe your concerns. She will provide gentle care, explain all treatment options and manage pain and discomfort accordingly.
