Isla Verde brings the breezy and sophisticated atmosphere of South Beach and the Caribbean to a somewhat unlikely corner in North Philadelphia. February 2015 welcomed a new husband and wife management team Maria & Richard Hernandez and the former sous chef Alex Alers newly promoted as head chef. The largely tapas-centered menu has once again become a hit after falling flat for a bit. They have masterfully incorporated traditional Spanish Nuevo Latino cuisine all the while offering great music and a wonderful ambiance. Ceviche is a major component of these offerings and you’d be well advised to order several and share them among your table. For main courses, a few of Chef Alex’s favorites include the Chuleta Suprema (Supreme thick Pork Chop) and the Mofongo Relleno con pollo, bistek o camarones (Stuffed Plaintains with chicken, steak or shrimp). On the weekends, Isla Verde is much more than a dinner destination. The sleek spot turns into a hip lounge and nightspot with Karaoke on Thursday’s (7 p.m.), DJ on Friday Nights (9 p.m.) and a live house band Saturday nights (9 p.m.). The beats are guaranteed to get you up out of your seat and moving your feet. If you’re looking for a little more persuasion, have a drink; you can’t go wrong with either a mango mojito or one of Isla’s signature pineapple and coconut martinis. The happy hour menu from 5-8pm on Wednesday -Friday’s has a lot to offer everyone. Isla has plenty of free street parking right out front. I95 Lehigh Ave exit is only 5 minutes away which is very convenient. The surrounding neighborhoods such as Northern Liberties and Fishtown are less than 8 blocks away. Check out their Facebook page for upcoming events such as; live bands, Jazz performances, salsa or Kizomba dance lessons or their newest event PAINTNITE.
The Philadelphia Argentine Tango School was founded in 2008 to offer top-notch instruction in Argentine tango to beginners through professional dancers in Philadelphia. In addition to group and private lessons, the Philadelphia Argentine Tango School offers weekly practicas, monthly milongas and occasional larger events. We have hosted five major tango festivals, and brought three major tango bands from Argentina to Philadelphia: Otros Aires (2009) and Tanghetto (2010) and the Alejandro Ziegler Quartet (2012 and 2013). We have also organized four Tango Tours to Buenos Aires. The school is directed by Meredith Klein, who has been dancing tango for 16 years and teaching tango full-time since 2006. Meredith is pleased to be able to bring a steady stream of internationally-recognized tango talent into Philadelphia each year, starting with Andres Amarilla, her dance partner, who spends 6 months of the year in Philadelphia. Other recent guest artists include: Gustavo Naveira & Giselle Anne, Nito Garcia & Elba Sottile, Carlos & Rosa Perez, Alejandro Larenas & Marisol Morales, Javier Antar & Kara Wenham, Carolina Zokalski & Diego Di Falco, Guillermo Cerneaz & Marina Kenny, Evan Griffiths, Adam Hoopengardner & Ciko Tanik, Jay Abling, Martin Maldonado & Maurizio Ghella, and Luis Bianchi & Daniela Pucci. Founded in 2006 by Luis Alexis Rodriguez & Rut Merry Maldanado when they were mere 6th graders at Philadelphia's Mariana Bracetti Academy Charter School who both felt a need to be involved in their communities and with their cultures while attending after-school mentorship programs. The small dance club they created has grown exponentially in the last 7 years to host over 40 students a semester ranging from the ages of 5 to 21. Having witnessed the profoundly positive impact the expression of dance can have on a community and on each student individually, co-Founder and Director, Luis Alexis Rodriguez, is continuously motivated and inspired to devote all his time and energy into helping youth in the same way he was supported and mentored in his younger years. This is an especially tremendous accomplishment considering Luis is still a youth himself, having just graduated from Aspira High School in June of 2013. Tremendos Dancers carries out their mission through class fees, financial sponsorship, and in-kind donations, which they greatly appreciate the support of and need in order to continue the amazing work they do in the Philadelphia and surrounding areas. Tremendos Dancers can be often found supporting many community organizations and causes and have won several awards for their community involvement and outreach for not only making the communities they touch a better place to live, but by making the youth they support engaged citizens who shine and grow in the wake of such positive experiences. Tremendos Dancers sincerely thanks you for liking our page and supporting our mission!
