The California Clipper

A comfortable neighborhood bar with a warm atmosphere that offers a well rounded classic cocktail menu, an affordable beer list, as well as an all around above great spirits selection. Not to mention a scotch list that'll knock your socks off (in the best way possible). The Clipper building, at 1002 North California Avenue in Chicago, was a movie theater from 1912 until 1918. Many public spaces, including theaters, were shut down during the killer flu epidemic at the end of World War I. It is unclear what occupied the commercial space between 1918 and 1937, when it reopened as the California Clipper Tavern, owned and operated by two brothers and a sister, Toni (Antoinette), Gus (August), and Joe Caporusso. Haywood Tavern began as a vision between Rodney Staton & Jason Balutan of creating an inviting neighborhood space with quality food, a great drink selection and a welcoming, casual environment. Jason was tending bar at the nearby California Clipper when he met Rodney, who moved to Chicago from Las Vegas and originally New Orleans, eventually spending time in the kitchens of Longman & Eagle, Spiaggia and heading up the redevelopment of Bite Cafe, while Jason ran neighborhood favorite Blind Robin. Many years and beers later, the two realized their dream of opening a tavern in the area they call home. The menu features always-changing food items along with the regular tavern favorites, made with the best ingredients at reasonable prices. It's a European-inspired corner tavern with a focus on quality, aiming to break the mediocre bar food stereotype while embracing diversity and maintaing the casual neighborhood feel.

In its past life, Tuman’s was known as Tuman’s Tavern (aka The Alcohol Abuse Center), a Ukrainian Village dive bar with an eccentric décor and an eclectic clientele. The tavern received a much-needed facelift and was rechristened Tuman’s Tap & Grill in 2012. The sunny corner storefront now boasts booth and high-top seating with subtle nods to the tap’s dive-bar roots, from the original stained glass and wood on the back bar to the Alcohol Abuse Center signage as wall art. The seasonally rotating menu features signature selections such as Prince Edward Island mussels with Allagash White Ale and shallots, and custom-ground Slagel Family Farm burgers, including the gorgonzola burger with shallot port reduction and caramelized onions. The full-service bar features handcrafted cocktails, a well-chosen wine list, and 28 ever-changing draft lines with a focus on highly-rated local craft beers. Tuman’s Tap & Grill offers seasonal outdoor dining on a spacious dog-friendly sidewalk café (weather permitting). Indoors the bar boasts several HDTVs, arcade and video games, free wifi and a jukebox. The bar is open from 11 a.m.-midnight Sunday; 4 p.m.-midnight Monday; 4 p.m.-2 a.m. Tuesday-Thursday; noon-2 a.m. Friday; and 11 a.m.-3 a.m. Saturday. The kitchen is open until 11 p.m. daily. The full menu is available for carryout; please phone 773-782-1400 to place your order. Tuman’s accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express.
