The Peralta Adobe is the oldest building in San Jose, northern California. The adobe was built in 1797, and is named after Luis María Peralta, its most famous resident. The original builder was probably Manuel González.HistoryManuel González, his wife, and their five children accompanied the Spanish Anza Party to California in 1776. He was one of the founders of the Pueblo de San Jose de Guadalupe, the first municipal government in California, established in 1777. This was the second house that González lived in, the first site was untenable due to winter flooding. In 1804 González died and the adobe went to Luís María Peralta. Peralta was a sergeant in the Spanish Army, commissioner of the Pueblo of San José, and owner of Rancho San Antonio of the East Bay, one of the largest ranchos in Alta California.Purchased by the City of San Jose in 1966, the adobe building was restored, and the surrounding park completed in 1976. The Peralta Adobe is San Jose's Historic Landmark #1, California Historical Landmark #866, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition, the adobe was the first site certified as a component of the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail.

Kawayan Folk Arts staff first assembled in August of 2006 at the home of Mark and Stella Trinidad in Mountain View, California. The first rehearsal was held at the Filipino-American Community Center in San Jose’s Japantown, California with the support of our friends at Hiyas Philippine Folk Dance Company of San Jose. Over the years, we have rehearsed at the American Musical Theater of San Jose; Steps, Styles, and Spotlights Studio in Fremont; Ballare Dance Center in south San Jose; and the studio at Seasons Marketplace at Landess. Kawayan artists rehearse in the studio approximately for four hours, twice a month, and perform one to three times a month. Artists commit to the company for each season beginning in January and ending in December. Artists do not pay fees to the company but may need to provide for costume necessities and transportation. Refreshments and some meals are provided. There are no requirements to join Kawayan Folk Arts, but new artists are subject to a new artists program. All staff positions are volunteer. On behalf of the board of directors of Arts Council Silicon Valley and 1stACT Silicon Valley, we are excited to announce the formal merger of our organizations, resulting in the creation of a regional nonprofit: Silicon Valley Creates. Our mission is to ignite investment and engagement in arts and creativity. Silicon Valley Creates builds on the Arts Council's 30-year history of support to the arts community through regional grantmaking, professional development, and the Artsopolis Network, ArtsConnect and Artist Laureate programs; and 1stACT Silicon Valley's dynamic role in incubating innovative programs and initiatives like SPUR San Jose, School of Arts and Culture at MHP, Discover the Unexpected/LiveSV, MALI (Multicultural Arts Leadership Institute), and nurturing partnerships like ArtSpark. Former 1stACT Managing Director and CEO, Connie Martinez, leads our new organization as its CEO. We have a strong blend of our staffs and boards. Our merged team is committed to raising the visibility and value of the arts, growing investment in arts and creativity, increasing participation in creative outlets, and building the capacity of our cultural ecosystem. In the coming year, we will work to increase our funding and promotion of the arts and to grow Silicon Valley's overall investment in the arts. We will conduct relevant research to understand our unique landscape and to help identify best practices and new approaches. We will also deliver training and workshops to connect the arts with new audiences. We will focus our efforts and resources on areas at the core of Silicon Valley's distinctive culture: participatory arts, cultural heritage, children's creativity, placemaking, and innovative ideas, partnerships, and art forms. We believe our merger brings experience and enthusiasm to a dynamic cultural landscape and strengthens our ability to provide the resources and leadership our community deserves. We welcome your participation, ideas and questions.
