Stand for Children is the most effective organization working to empower parents, elect courageous leaders, and advance K-12 public education.

Literacy Council of Seattle serves a diverse group of adult learners each year. These include immigrants and refugees from more than 25 countries and many American-born adults. About 52% are between 25 and 44 years of age, 80% are female, and 100% are eager to learn English. Some learners who come to LCS speak two or three other languages. Others have no reading or writing skills in any language. Learners are highly motivated to progress in their English skills. Many stay 6 months to 1 year until they can manage the language demands of their job and some continue until they can enter a community college or job training programs. Students are referred to LCS by friends, relatives, libraries, neighbors, co-workers, and state agencies. Our Volunteer Tutors teach the students to be successful in their jobs, families, and the community by teaching them the English skills they need. This is a great all-round opportunity to come in, be trained and give the gift of literacy while contributing to the community.
