Yogi Beans is an educational, energetic, and transformative yoga-for-kids program. Our classes develop children’s abilities to focus (attention), stand up straight (posture), move their limbs with control (coordination) and grace (flexibility), and find inner strength (self-confidence). The Yogi Beans curriculum is specifically designed to introduce kids to the foundations of yoga and translate yogic concepts into a language children comprehend and appreciate. Classes provide children with a peaceful respite from their busy city schedules and long school days. The Yogi Beans program is a wonderful way to introduce your child to a healthy lifelong activity that is noncompetitive, non-judgmental, physically challenging and a ton of fun!

The Roosevelt Island Beacon Afterschool Program is a non-profit organization that works in tandem with the Roosevelt Island Youth Program to provide 1st-8th graders with a safe, fun and educational atmosphere at the end of their busy school days. Our program runs from dismissal time at 2:30pm until 6:00pm. During Holidays, RI Beacon is open from 9:00am to 5:00pm and provides fun day trips including movie and museum outings. The children are split into 5-6 groups divided mostly by grade, each group number correlating to their grade number (groups 5 and 6 consist of 5th-8th graders). At 2:30 we provide snack and prepare the children for homework help. Each group has their own designated area for homework and at least 2 counselors assigned to the individual group for the entirety of the year. The counselors escort their groups throughout the school for different activities during the afternoon. Our daily activities consist of cultural appreciation, international geography, international music appreciation and organized games. In addition, there are featured activities that occur one to two days a week, these include Cooking, Art, Theater Club, Newspaper Club and various sports clubs just to name a few. Parents are welcome to pick-up their child at any time throughout the day by signing them out at our front desk; official dismissal time is at 6:00pm, but the fun doesn’t have to stop then. Beacon also provides specialized programs for kids and adults after hours. To further enrich your child’s beacon experience, we have 2 mentoring programs that are soccer and baseball related and both are held 2 nights a week. We also offer a Female Leadership Soccer and Social Justice program in which girls will not only learn the fundamentals of the game, but will also learn about the structure and functions of the court system. Our final after hours program for children is High School volleyball held only 1 night a week. For our adult patrons, beacon has a number of sports and exercise activities from 8:00pm to 10:00pm. We offer adult Basketball 3 nights a week, Adult Indoor Soccer 1 night a week and Adult Volleyball 1 night a week as well as Adult Yoga. We service a rather large pool of participants, with approximately 230 overall participants and about 150 of those participants are Roosevelt Island residents. Many of our children travel from other schools to participate in our Beacon Program.
