Sardi's is a Continental restaurant located at 234 West 44th Street (between Broadway and Eighth Avenue) in the Theater District in Manhattan, in New York City. Known for the hundreds of caricatures of show-business celebrities that adorn its walls, Sardi's opened at its current location on March 5, 1927.Creation and early yearsMelchiorre Pio Vincenzo "Vincent" Sardi, Sr. (born in S. Marzano Oliveto, Italy on December 23, 1885 – died November 19, 1969) and his wife Eugenia ("Jenny") Pallera (born in Castell'Alfero, Italy on July 14, 1889) opened their first eatery, The Little Restaurant, in the basement of 246 West 44th Street in 1921. When that building was slated for demolition in 1926 (to build the St. James Theatre), they accepted an offer from the theater magnates, the Shubert brothers, to relocate to a new building the brothers were erecting down the block. The new restaurant, Sardi's, opened March 5, 1927.When business slowed after the move, Vincent Sardi sought a gimmick to attract customers. Recalling the movie star caricatures that decorated the walls of Joe Zelli’s, a Parisian restaurant and jazz club, Sardi decided to recreate that effect in his establishment. He hired a Russian refugee named Alex Gard (1898–1948) (born Alexis Kremkoff in Kazan, Russia) to draw Broadway celebrities. Sardi and Gard drew up a contract that stated Gard would make the caricatures in exchange for one meal per day at the restaurant. The first official caricature by Gard was of Ted Healy, the vaudevillian of Three Stooges fame. When Sardi’s son, Vincent Sardi, Jr. (1915–2007), took over restaurant operations in 1947, he offered to change the terms of Gard's agreement. Gard refused and continued to draw the caricatures in exchange for meals until his death.
Idealist, philanthropist, man of science, Dr. Henry Jekyll was all that and more. His lifetime was spent in service to society and culminated in the good doctor's greatest, and some would say tragic, experiment. Dr. Henry Jekyll was always fascinated by man's two separate natures: good and evil. Using himself as a test subject, he performed bizarre experiments, attempting to control humanity's darker side. Unfortunately, he was seduced by his own malignant nature and on many occasions transformed into a diabolical mad man whom he later named Hyde. In 1931, Dr. Jekyll fled London and traveled to New York City, a city filled with outcasts and wanderers. Continuing his research in the hope of finding a way to rid himself of Hyde, Jekyll formed a close circle of advisors and allies and together they founded the Jekyll & Hyde Club. It soon became a social meeting place for explorers, philosophers, biologists, and other daring men and women whose exploits into science and adventure we deemed too unorthodox by their colleagues in accepted society. Nevertheless, these visionaries shared a common goal, to understand the darker nature within us all. Jekyll and his compatriots have filled the club with artifacts and trophies from their numerous amazing adventures. Their histories are summarized on plaques throughout the club. Come visit his very entertaining compatriots strolling in and about the club such as Dr. Sawyer Bones, Ivanta Hacketoff, Colonel Cary Clark, Major Michael magoo, Phillip Andrew Edward Carrington IV, Professor Pricilla Prank, Tippy Toppingsworth, or Ariel Boatsman. Or witness the bizarre and eccentric characters that spring to life to interact with club visitors. These characters include insecure and somewhat bumbling Zeus; Sidney Femur and Marty Patella as the "Funny Bones" the original vaudeville act at the club back in 1931; Tobias Bloodworth, a friendly werewolf who gets everyone howling along; Sphinx, one of the grooviest of all the characters, brought to the club directly from Egypt by one of the club's explorers; and Fang, a gargoyle from Transylvania and a guardian of the Nether World. These main characters are complimented by a host of other interesting and "of course" deceased characters that come to life at the most unpredictable times. The modern day Jekyll & Hyde Club is now open to the public. If you are not faint of heart, come mingle with our cast of characters and enjoy a brave new food and entertainment adventure awaiting your arrival.

Philipos Mengistu gained his first culinary experience at the restaurant his parents operated in Addis Abeba in the early 1970's. Philipos used to spend much of his time behind the scenes in the restaurant kitchen. He watched his mother intently over the years, learning recipes that had been passed from generation to generation through the family lineage, and picking up his mother's expertise. One area being in blending her own version of berbere, a hot sauce common in much of the Ethiopian cuisine. Philipos moved to the United States in 1990, with the concept of introducing New York City to Ethiopian food. As he scouted locations and saved money for his first business in the US, he worked as an aircraft technician for Ethiopian Airways and a Yellow Cab driver. Philipos opened his first restaurant, 'Meskerem Ethiopian Restaurant', with two partners in 1995. Meskerem was a success, receiving positive reviews from the New York Times and the Daily News, among others. In 1999, Philipos launched plans to run his own restaurant, this time with the aim of focusing specifically on his family's recipes and creating a warm and cozy environment, surrounded by traditional Ethiopian decor. He spent a year scouting the ideal venue and perfecting the ingredients of his new menu, as well as arranging to import berbere directly from his own mother in Ethiopia, using only her recipe.
This rustic Italian wine bar specializes in unique Italian tapas or Cicchetti, and is home to some of the finest Italian wines. It is a great spot for dates due to its lively, intimate setting.
Although many restaurants in the theater district bill themselves as trattorias, few achieve the authentic feel and taste of Maria Pia. This charming Italian eatery boasts comfortable indoor seating for 80, a sun-dappled, 20-seat, rear outdoor garden, and a genial mood that makes the menu that much more savory. The three-course prix fixe menus offer dishes slick enough for savvy palates that still taste as if they were cooked up by mama Maria herself.
