The University of Maryland, College Park is a public research university located in the city of College Park in Prince George's County, Maryland, approximately from the northeast border of Washington, D.C. Founded in 1856, the university is the flagship institution of the University System of Maryland. With a fall 2010 enrollment of more than 37,000 students, over 100 undergraduate majors, and 120 graduate programs, Maryland is the largest university in the state and the largest in the Washington Metropolitan Area. It is a member of the Association of American Universities and competes in athletics as a member of the Big Ten Conference.The University of Maryland's proximity to the nation's capital has resulted in research partnerships with the Federal government. Shipley Field at Bob "Turtle" Smith Stadium is a baseball stadium in College Park, Maryland. It has served as the home field of the Maryland Terrapins baseball team at the University of Maryland since 1965. Shipley Field was formerly the home of the College Park Bombers of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League, and was also used as a baseball venue by the Bowie Baysox during the 1994 season.The stadium holds 2,500 people and opened in 1965. It is named after former Maryland baseball coach, Burton Shipley. In 2004, a new artificial turf replaced an older turf installation in the stadium's infield, and improvements were made to the under field drainage system.
The William P. Cole, Jr. Student Activities Building, more commonly known as Cole Field House, was the home of the University of Maryland basketball teams from 1955 until it was replaced by XFINITY Center (originally called Comcast Center) in 2002. Cole is situated in the heart of the campus, right next to Stamp Student Union and near McKeldin Library.Cole Field House still holds the distinction of being the site of the most upsets of No. 1-ranked men's basketball teams. In 2002, Maryland defeated Duke, the seventh and final top-ranked foe to lose at the arena.HistoryThe building was originally constructed in 1955 as the Student Activities Building at a cost of $3.3 million. Although the building's original capacity was 12,000, additional seats were installed throughout the years to bring the final capacity to 14,596 (in 1993). The first basketball game was played on December 2, 1955, when Maryland beat Virginia 67 - 55.The first coach at the venue, Bud Millikan, did not like its size, saying at one point "It's like playing on a neutral court" with seats too far from the courts. In the late 1960s Lefty Driesell added nearly 3,000 seats around the court raising the hometown decibel level.The center was renamed the William P. Cole, Jr. Student Activities Building in 1956 after Judge William P. Cole, Jr., who was chairman of the university's Board of Regents from 1944 to 1956.
Maryland Wrestling practices in a beautiful 2,500 square foot mat room located on the ground floor of the new home of Maryland Athletics, the Comcast Center. Strength and Conditioning, Sports Medicine, the Wrestling Lockerroom and the 1,500-seat Comcast Center Gymnasium, which serves as the team's competition venue, are all located along the same hallway as the Terps wrestling practice facility.
