Enter the monOrchid and you walk into a home away from home, a diverse and thriving culture of its own, a collaborative workspace, a community hub. Be it for a wedding, a photo shoot, a study session, an office or desk space, a film project, a party, or just to grab a steaming cup of craft-brewed coffee, your presence is a welcome addition to the space. Behind the white brick and striking mural-work of its exterior walls, the building transforms into a multifunctional workspace hosting two art galleries, a parade of loft-level coworking spaces, a coffeehouse, a restaurant, a conference room, and not one but two full-sized studios for photography or film. The entire space is open to the public and available for rent. It is also fully convertible and loaded with service options including in-house catering options, event support, and even planning services. Because of its unique and diversified offerings, the monOrchid has been a central hub of the Phoenix art scene since the year 2000. It remains to this day a destination point during the once-per-month arts extravaganza the downtown area knows as First Fridays (as well as the lesser known Third Fridays), featuring regularly curated art displays, local artists, and even art competitions. The monOrchid is not just a building; it is a living member of its community with character, personality, a spirit. As a principal hub set at the very heart of central Phoenix’s famous Roosevelt Row, the monOrchid has catered remarkably to a modern audience, adapting both its architectural design and its functions to the changing needs of a budding art community.

Halldor and Gail Hjalmarson have maintained a pottery studio in the Roosevelt Historic District of central Phoenix since 1973 and produce a body of creative work which reflects the imagery and feeling of their Sonoran Desert. He says “I use sprigs to produce low-relief imagery on the surface of wheel thrown vessels and slab tiles. I try to achieve an interaction between the elements found in micro-landscapes of our desert. I work with reptiles, birds, insects, small mammals, plant life, and geology. Each work becomes a compositional challenge as I attempt to create relationships and tension between the low-relief images. I use a palette of colored ‘adhering’ slips and usually finish with semi-transparent glazes.” Surface embellishment has become a passion for Halldor and he has developed a variety of techniques of imparting texture and imagery to the clay surface. He has refined the art of sprigging and has sculpted and cast more than 300 images of the Sonoran Desert which he uses in his work. His book, “Old Dog New Tricks,” is a most comprehensive publication on the art of sprigging. Halldor builds most of his tools and equipment. He fires in a 40 cubic fot gas kiln of his own design and construction, and built the studio in which he works. They both work closely with the Japanese Garden and Tea House in Phoenix and provide them with vessels used in ceremonies. He has studied and documented clay arts in Korea and Japan and maintains a friendship with potters from those countries. He holds a master’s degree in art education from Arizona State University and has taught ceramic arts in secondary schools and community colleges in Arizona. He has shared experiences and techniques with other potters through workshops, lectures and print media. Halldor is represented in numerous collections including the City of Phoenix, the Valley Bank and the Ceramic Research Center at Arizona State University. He has exhibited in the Arizona Annual and Bi-annual exhibits at the Phoenix and Albuquerque Art Museums and markets his work through gallery shops in the southwestern United States.
Would you be surprised to learn that Phoenix was built around streetcars? In 1887, the first mule-drawn streetcar rolled on freshly laid rails down Washington Street. At its peak around 1920, the system ran on over twenty miles of track on city streets. Service continued until a suspicious car barn fire in 1947 destroyed most of the streetcar fleet, forcing the city to shift to buses as the backbone of the transit system. Today, the Phoenix Trolley Museum is dedicated to the preservation of original Phoenix trolley cars and memorabilia and public education about their place in the history of America's sixth largest city. We use the unique story of the Phoenix streetcar system to connect you with the city as it once was ... The Phoenix Trolley Museum: We'll MOVE You!
