Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium is an outdoor football stadium on the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, United States. It has been the home of the Washington Huskies of the Pac-12 Conference since 1920, hosting its football games. The university also holds its annual commencement at the stadium in June. It is located at the southeastern corner of campus, between Montlake Boulevard N.E. and Union Bay, just north of the Montlake Cut. The stadium is served by the University of Washington light rail station, as well as several bus routes. The stadium most recently underwent a $280 million renovation that was completed in 2013. Its U-shaped design was specifically oriented to minimize glare from the early afternoon sun in the athletes' eyes. The open end overlooks scenic Lake Washington and the Cascade Mountains, including Mount Rainier. Prior to the 2011–13 renovation, its total capacity of 72,500 made it the largest stadium in the Pacific Northwest and the 23rd largest in college football.
For over 40 years the Native American community has envisioned the building of a longhouse-style facility at the University of Washington, to function as a “home away from home” for Native students attending this educational institution. On March 12, 2015, we completed Phase One and opened the doors to our multi-service space. The Intellectual House provides a multi-service learning and gathering space for Native students, faculty, staff, and others from various cultures and communities: a space where we come together in a supporting and welcoming educational environment to share our knowledge and cultures with one another. The name wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ is a Lushootseed word that means Intellectual House. It was gifted to the UW by respected Coast Salish elder, the late Vi Hilbert. The wǝɫǝbʔaltxʷ honors her legacy as a cultural leader and educator; its coastal architectural design recognizes and pays homage to the people whose land it is built on.
