On September 9, 2011, Saint Louis continued to celebrate the game of chess with the opening of the World Chess Hall of Fame (WCHOF) directly across the street from the Chess Club and Scholastic Center. This historic building features the U.S. and World Chess Hall of Fame, displays of artifacts from the World Chess Hall of Fame’s permanent collection, and temporary exhibitions highlighting the great players, historic games, and rich cultural history of chess. The WCHOF's collection now includes pieces such as a 500-year-old piece from an Egyptian game called senet, the earliest known board game; a custom-made set of chess furniture that belonged to the American Grandmaster and World Champion Bobby Fischer; and the first commercial chess computer; and a silver service awarded to Paul Morphy, American chess player and World Champion. The World Chess Hall of Fame’s current focus is building awareness for the cultural and artistic significance of chess. It presents exhibitions of artistic and historical significance and offers interpretive programs that lend context and meaning to chess. In addition, the WCHOF commemorates the careers of its Hall of Fame inductees. The World Chess Hall of Fame is now the only chess-focused institution that includes both a hall of fame and a museum, and it is the only solely chess-focused collecting institution in the United States.
The World Chess Hall of Fame is a nonprofit, collecting institution situated in the Central West End neighborhood of St. Louis, Missouri, United States. The WCHOF is the only institution of its kind and offers a variety of programming to explore the dynamic relationship between art and chess, including educational outreach initiatives that provide context and meaning to the game and its continued educational impact. Founded in 1984, it is run by the United States Chess Trust, a charitable arm of the United States Chess Federation. Formerly located in New Windsor, New York; Washington D.C.; and Miami, Florida, it moved to St. Louis on September 9, 2011.HistoryThe brainchild of Steven Doyle, USCF president from 1984 to 1987, the World Chess Hall of Fame was created in 1986 as the U.S. Chess Hall of Fame.Opened in 1988 in the basement of the Federation’s then-headquarters in New Windsor, New York, the small museum contained a modest collection, including a book of chess openings signed by Bobby Fischer; a silver set awarded to Paul Morphy, American chess player and unofficial World Champion; and cardboard plaques honoring past grandmasters.
As we transition into Healthworks! Kids' Museum, we are infectiously contaminating and inspiring kids and the community to have fun, learn and make great overall health choices! As we continue to operate from our theatre located at 727 N.1st St. on Laclede's Landing until February 26th, 2016, we are consistently adding contagiously contaminated health programs. After February we will move to a new and improved space and museum with lots of fun hands-on health exhibits, as well as an indoor skeleton climber! Dare you decide to open the infectious doors when we open in early May? Let the epidemic of a healthy community start with you! For a full list of new programs please visit our website healthworkskidsstl.org.
