Our Philosophy The Institute for Human Centered Design has chosen to use the term "human centered design" as the most representative of our philosophy. We are invested in the international universal design/design-for-all/inclusive design movement but we believe that it is important to be open to complementary ideas that make sense within the simple and open framework of human centered design. Important parallel trends today include green design and design for health and healing. We see value in finding the common ground between movements and in working collaboratively. We embrace our ongoing relationship with our traditional allies in disability and aging. We try to be attentive to the spectrum of ability that poses less obvious demands upon design, especially chronic illness and the cognitive spectrum of disability. We believe that the link between chronic illness and/or disability and poverty must catalyze action that includes a new attention to the role of design. With our stated mission of enhancing human experience, we see everyone under the umbrella of human centered design. To borrow from our colleague Ray Lifchez, we see all of design as a "social art" inclusive of urban design, landscape architecture, architecture, interior design, industrial design and information design. Design is also problem-solving and we would extend the usual design disciplines to include policy making.

Creating experiential environments through architecture, interior design, graphic design, and user experience. Bergmeyer is a Boston-based firm with a national presence, designing for a broad range of human needs with user experience top of mind. Through in-depth research, thoughtful detail, and high standards, we create unique places for where people learn, shop, live, work, and eat. We aim to tease out the explicit goals, intangible values, and unstated needs that factor into a project's success. We are adept and passionate collaborators who partner with clients to solve challenging problems and achieve specific goals with elegant design. We engage myriad perspectives through questions that fuel conversation and generate new ideas because an inclusive approach energizes the process and elevates the design outcome. We measure the success of our designs in their benefit to their primary users, as well as their value to the whole community and impact on the surrounding context. We use an organized and systematic process to synthesize diverse perspectives and complex needs into a singular solution. To us, a successful project transcends programmatic requirements. It conveys a central underlying concept that arises from the design team's understanding of the challenges, original research, and creative inspiration. It balances beauty and originality with durability and functionality. Most importantly, it is a place where people want to be.
Old State House History. The Old State House is a historic building in Boston, Massachusetts, at the intersection of Washington and State Streets. Built in 1713, it was the seat of the Massachusetts General Court until 1798, and is one of the oldest public buildings in the United States. One of the landmarks on Boston's Freedom Trail, it is the oldest surviving public building in Boston, and now serves as a history museum operated by the Bostonian Society. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and a Boston Landmark by the Boston Landmarks Commission in 1994.HistoryThe Massachusetts Town House: seat of colony government 1713–1776Today's brick Old State House was built in 1712–13, possibly designed by Robert Twelves; the previous building, the wooden Town House of 1657, had burned in the fire of 1711. A notable feature was the pair of seven-foot tall wooden figures depicting a lion and unicorn, symbols of the British monarchy. The building housed a Merchant's Exchange on the first floor and warehouses in the basement. On the second floor, the east side contained the Council Chamber of the Royal Governor while the west end of the second floor contained chambers for the Courts of Suffolk County and the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court. The central portion contained the chambers for the elected Massachusetts Assembly. This chamber is notable for including public galleries, the first known example of such a feature being included in a chamber for elected officials in the English-speaking world.

The Ames Building is a skyscraper located in Boston, Massachusetts. It is sometimes ranked as the tallest building in Boston from its completion in 1893 until 1915, when the Custom House Tower was built. However, the building was never the tallest structure in Boston. The steeple of the Church of the Covenant, completed in 1867, was much taller than the Ames Building. Nevertheless, it is considered to be Boston's first skyscraper. In 2007, the office building was converted to a luxury hotel.HistoryLocated at 1 Court Street and Washington Mall in downtown Boston, the Ames Building was designed by the architectural firm of Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge in Richardsonian Romanesque and paid for by Frederick L. Ames. It is the second tallest masonry load bearing-wall structure in the world, exceeded only by the Monadnock Building in Chicago, completed that same year. It is thirteen stories high with a three-story granite base and sandstone and brick. The sandstone is from the Berea formation in Ohio and was supplied by Cleveland Quarries Company. Construction was completed in 1889, but interior work was not completed for occupancy until 1893. It became the corporate headquarters for the Ames families' agricultural tool company.
