Hatha, or physical yoga, is a 5000 year old science. Bishnu Charan Ghosh, the brother of Paramahansa Yogananda and author of Autobiography of a Yogi, was one of the most influential Hatha yoga masters of the past century who scientifically documented the practice of yoga and its ability to cure ailments and heal the body. Bishnu Gosh trained Bikram Choudhury, who grew up to eventually demonstrate and teach yoga around the world. In the early 1970's, he founded the Bikram Yoga College of India in the United States, headquartered in Los Angeles. Bikram Yoga features a primary sequence of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises which are taught at ~105°F / ~40% humidity to warm muscles, flush toxins, and facilitate safe stretching. Muscles, joints, and ligaments are prepared for each sequential posture and fresh oxygenated blood is recirculated to 100% of the body. This practice balances and strengthens the human body to prevent illness and injury, and promote weight loss, muscle tone and vibrant good health. In addition, the series challenges concentration, patience, determination and self-control, which facilitates mental clarity and reduced stress.
