The Department of Music cultivates music as a contemporary and global art, grounded in a long historical tradition, by combining higher education with professional training and experience for its undergraduate and graduate/professional students. The Department offers students of music opportunities to learn, grow, and develop their skills and disciplines in an urban cultural setting. With close proximity to Detroit's cultural center, students have access to the resources of such premiere institutions as the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Public Library, the Detroit Opera House, and Orchestra Hall. Building on the strengths of its geographic and cultural setting, the Department maintains public access to its performances and degree programs, offers high-level professional and academic standards and unique creative and scholarly opportunities appropriate to a large research university, and cultivates a deep aesthetic understanding of music in our students and the larger urban arts community.

By retaining international students, GTRI is a catalyst to lessening the skills gap in the STEM fields especially, and cultivating a climate in which Michigan businesses can be competitive in the new economy. GTRI collaborates with the Governor's office, the Office for New Americans, Global Detroit, over 30 Michigan Universities, the University Research Corridor (URC), the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA), Michigan's economic development agencies, ethnic chambers, professional organizations, and employers throughout the state. GTRI is funded by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the New Economy Initiative (NEI), and is housed in partnership with Prima Civitas. GTRI was originally formed as a result of the Global Detroit Study about the impact of immigrant talent on the region’s economy. Studies have shown that immigrants disproportionately contribute to economic growth, employment, and wage gains. In addition, more than 50% of PhDs and sometimes as much as 40% of master’s degrees in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Mathematics) are awarded each year in the U.S. to international students. Since IT and engineering are the fastest growing industries, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find qualified candidates for high level tech positions if international students are not considered as part of an employer’s applicant pool. GTRI provides international students and local employers with training and resources on relevant immigration regulations, information on finding a job in Michigan, and help with cross-cultural issues that both employers and international applicants may experience during the hiring process.

Modern day Sigma Beta Rho has grown considerably since its inception. It has expanded from its roots in the East Coast with 42 recognized chapters and colonies that span the breadth of the nation. Now adding Wayne State University to its ranks. This growth stems from a reputation for excellent values-based programming, diversity amongst our brotherhood, and alignment with the values of many students striving for a competitive edge before entering a post-globalized workplace. As an organization which prides itself in having individuals from every continent, ethnicity, and religion, we seek to foster enriching cross-cultural discourse both amongst our members and extended to campus communities. Through the efforts of our brothers, we have become the largest and most expansive fraternity of our kind in less than 18 years. With each passing day, we realize that we are another day closer to the nationwide network envisioned by our Founding Fathers. Over the years, we have carried our ideals of Society, Brotherhood, and Remembrance beyond our original objectives. We promote diversity within our organization, as illustrated by the map below marking all countries and heritages from which our brothers hail. With such a strong foundation of brothers, we continue to create capable and upstanding leaders for the community that has done so much for us. --------------------------------------- ---19961996199619961996--- ---19961996199619961996--- ---19961996199619961996--- -----19961996--------------96---- ------19961996-------------------- --------19961996------------------ ----------19961996---------------- --------19961996------------------ -------19961996------------------- ------19961996-------------96---- ---19961996199619961996--- ---19961996199619961996--- ---19961996199619961996--- ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- ----199619960919961996------ ----1996199600019961996---- ----19961996------19961996--- ----19961996------19961996--- ----19961996------19961996--- ----199619960919961996----- ----19961996019961996------- ----199619960919961996----- ----19961996------19961996--- ----19961996------19961996--- ----19961996------19961996--- ----1996199600019961996---- ----199619960919961996------ ----1996199619961996--------- ---------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------- ----199619960919961996------ ----1996199600019961996---- ----19961996____19961996--- ----19961996____19961996--- ----19961996____19961996--- ----199619960919961996------ ----19961996019961996-------- ----19961996091996------------- ----19961996----------------------- ----19961996----------------------- ----19961996----------------------- ----19961996----------------------- ----19961996----------------------- ----19961996----------------------- ---------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------- Alpha Arsenal - Fall 2014 --------------------------------------------- #1. Here's how it works: 1. An artist creates a custom piece of art – anything from a painting to a screenprint to a sculpture. 2. They write their Twitter handle and the hashtag #FAFDET as well as "Facebook: Free Art Friday Detroit" on the back of the piece. They may even include a note offering more instructions. See sample: http://www.fafdet.com/note.pdf 3. Then they hide their art somewhere in the city. 4. The artist posts a photo clue of the drop spot to the FAFDET Facebook page and tweets the same clue with hashtag #FAFDET. 5. Anyone who finds it is free to take the artwork home. We just ask that they tweet or post a photo to this page letting us know it has found a good home.
The AmeriCorps Urban Safety project is designed to build a culture of neighborly communication and responsibility in the city of Detroit. In order to reduce crime in the area, we are working with local residents to create block clubs, a forum for residents to connect and create neighborhood safety strategies. This initiative provides the spark for a network of residents that will continue their crime-fighting efforts well after the program has moved on. We work to improve levels of neighborhood guardianship; reduce victim attractiveness and susceptibility; and provide technical assistance for wireless internet connections in residents’ homes, in order to enable citizens to use Internet-based programs to help reduce crime.
