Kitchen’s menu is not an attempt to be gimmicky. It is a menu, like any other restaurant’s, that attempts to create a cuisine based on something. The North End of Boston, like many older Italian establishments, recreated Italian cuisine to the point that it was no longer Italian; hence the term American Italian. The same can be said for almost all immigrant style cuisines in the United States. Kitchen’s menu is my attempt to highlight dishes that have a culinary significance for whatever the reason. Cuisine, dining, cooking and recipes are part of what makes us human. The art of cooking and sharing recipes is key to our survival and helps create a culture. Recipes have been passed down from the beginning of society and it is those recipes that have sustained us through the years. A cookbook is novel in the fact that it represents a snapshot in the culinary timetable. It shows what people wanted and often times had available to eat. A cookbook in many ways was the first form of a self-help book, because to eat is one thing, but to create a meal that tastes good and utilizes the abundance of available ingredients, is another. To transform that into a dining experience is truly part of what again makes us human. The menu at Kitchen, in truest form, is nothing but our interpretation of recipes, dishes, and cooking techniques. In essence, the same as any menu at any restaurant, but Kitchen states on the menu with a circa date the point of reference of that dish. Kitchen is an American restaurant because it is in America. A restaurant that attempts to make the diner feel like they are in France by wording the restroom signs in French and putting miniature statues of the Eiffel Tower on display with vintage French posters is creating a gimmick. In the end, gimmick or no gimmick, a restaurant will be graded by its service and its food. Kitchen is designed to be a comfortable setting where diners can enjoy good service with well prepared and presented drinks and food…nothing more nothing less.

After being embraced by the families of Brookline, Barcelona is thrilled to bring the best of Spanish food, culture, and style to the historic streets of Boston’s South End. This neighborhood is home to independent retail shops, an active artistic community, and some of the city’s most progressive eateries. Barcelona is just steps away from charming residential condos and the lush community gardens of Berkeley Street. The restaurant's design features a dramatic wood slat bar ceiling and rich walnut flooring. Rustic plaster covers the walls and custom-built organic-shaped light fixtures illuminate the dining space. The mid-century modern furnishings are the perfect representation of Barcelona’s contemporary and bold aesthetic.

Mela Restaurant

Boston’s South End has rapidly become a culinary destination in its own right. To find the neighborhood’s first Indian restaurant, look for the striking pink and gold windows of MELA on Tremont Street, a unique dining space that has struck a chord with residents here since the day it opened in 2007. The denizens of the South End are night owls, so MELA serves its full dinner menu – for eat in or take out -- until 11 PM nightly. But, it’s the abundant brunch buffet, served for just $12.95 from 11:30 til 3:00 on Saturdays and Sundays, that really draws crowds. The refreshing Indian themed cocktails at MELA’s mini-bar also win fans. MELA’s take on Indian cuisine is a touch lighter than most, including two spectacular Hot Stone dishes that allow diner’s to “cook” their own food on sizzling hot rocks brought to the table. Meat or fish available. Served with a green salad and a variety of dipping sauces, it’s virtually fat free and costs about $25 for two people. MELA also features several classic curries (goat, tilapia, lamb shank) in styles made famous in Madras, Goa and Kerala … and a hot tandoor oven turns out dishes like mahi mahi tikka, mixed grill, and almost a dozen tasty Indian breads priced at $3-5. You can easily spend a whole day in the South End, and MELA makes a fine option for lunch, brunch dinner or a late night snack. Come as you are.

The co-owners of Merengue Restaurant, Nivia and Hector Piña bring you Vejigantes a new culinary experience inspired by the Puerto Rican cuisine. Wikipedia: A vejigante is a clown-like character in Puerto Rican festival celebrations (mainly seen during Carnival time). Traditional colors of the vejigantes were black, red, white, and yellow. Today, vejigante wear brightly colored, ornate masks of all colors and a costume with bat-like wings. The term vejigante derives from the word vejiga (bladder) and gigante (giant), due to custom of blowing up and painting cow bladders. The masks are often linked to many festivals that continue today, especially in Loíza and Ponce. Vejigantes will become the go to restaurant for upscale Puerto Rican dining. It combines authentic Puerto Rican cuisine by Cordon Bleu trained Chef Randy Muñoz and traditional décor to indulge both your sense of taste and sight. A meal at Vegigantes is an experience unlike any other in Boston!
