For every $2 received, First Book-Orlando provides a local child in need with a brand-new book! *** Many factors affect child literacy rates. However, access to books is often overlooked. Access affects enthusiasm. Access affects practice. And access affects teachers' impact. For 42,730 Orange County children living in low-income households, access to age-appropriate books within the home is an issue dealt with daily. **In fact, the majority of children living in low-income households do not own a single book.** First Book-Orlando awards book grants to deserving literacy programs and Title I schools within the Greater Orlando area (check our web page for a full list of past grantees!). Each child receives a minimum of six books -- enough to start their first home library! And what's more... First Book works! *Children receiving books through First Book reported a triple increase in "high interest in reading." *More than 70% of children reported an increase in at-home reading. *And more than 99% of participating programs "increase their literacy efforts and offer new curriculum activities." (Source: firstbook.org) *** As the local advisory board of First Book, we are entirely volunteer run. We understand the value of time and hard-earned money. And we also understand the value of passion. We don't just want your dollar. We want *you* to become a part of our community. So actively join us on Facebook, subscribe to our e-newsletter, and drop by events. (We're even keen to the occasional hand-written note).
C.F.I. stands for "Created For Intimacy:" We are all created for intimacy. God created humans with a God shaped void that can only be filled through a personal relationship with Him. From the beginning, God created humans to be in a relationship with Himself - creating us in His image with value and purpose. This relationship was scarred when Adam and Eve sinned against God in the Garden of Eden. Despite our rebellion, God came to rescue us from the power of sin and death through the face of His own beloved Son, Jesus. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus, humans can enter into a personal relationship (intimacy) with our Creator. Through faith in the Person of Jesus Christ, by God's glorious grace, we can be restored and renewed in our relationship towards God. This relationship is the bedrock of finding out what life is about - offering hope, lasting satisfaction, identity, and purpose. God created you for intimacy with Himself - apart from Him, life is meaningless. Our Mission: To provide a hand up for those in need, helping them to break free from poverty by offering hunger relief, crisis care, transformative education, and employment training opportunities. Our Vision is to See: Every need met Every spirit lifted Every stomach filled Every broken heart comforted Every child’s dream realized
Showers: 3 shelters in the Orlando area provide showers to homeless 2 of which have a fee for usage and are available only on weekdays. Because of the high volume of people that use them, many of these facilities are unsightly and unsanitary. Our goal is to provide a clean and safe place for them to take showers the end of the week and throughout the weekend. Laundry: Many homeless individuals receive free clothing from different organizations. However, when these clothes get worn or dirty they throw them away and consistently go and get fresh clothing. We will give them a facility that they are able to go and wash their laundry, so such waste can be prevented. Remedial Aid: This is defined as items that help equip homeless individuals while out on the street. Items include hygiene products, as well as items to protect them from the harsh elements that occur in Florida.
