Synopsis: The collections may be grouped into six major divisions: The General (Core) Collection, containing 210,000 books related to various American studies subjects. Some subjects-particularly Western Americana, have been collected in extensive depth. The collection also contains broadly developed subjects related to the general humanities-especially history, world travel, and exploration-the social sciences, and the history of the natural sciences and the history of technology. The Barriger Collection, focusing on American Railroad history and currently distinguished as one of the largest in the United States, containing 40,000 books plus primary manuscript documents and photographs The Pott Waterways Collection, which focuses on United States river and inland waterways history, containing 11,000 books and a large archival collection estimated at over 75,000 individual items. The Pott Collection also contains periodicals and current newspapers, with a current list of subscriptions numbering 75 popular and scholarly magazines and journals. The Art Collection, the Mercantile Library continues to collect, preserve and exhibit the work of artists who have made Missouri their home, from the early artist-explorers for whom St. Louis was a hub for access to the unexplored West to today’s artists who continue to capture the life and beauty of the American Midwest. Reference collections, containing approximately 2,000 "ready reference" volumes of general, local and historical materials, which is supported by the Core general collections outlined above, access to numerous on-line bibliographic resources and microfilmed materials. Special library collections include various research collections including original manuscript sources, the archives of the Mercantile Library, the clipping and photo files (morgue) of the St. Louis Globe Democrat, historical newspapers, and rare books.

The University of Missouri–St. Louis Alumni Association boasts more than 70,000 members living in all 50 states and more than 60 countries. The UMSL Alumni Relations Office raises critical funds to provide scholarships, support academic programs and strengthen community partnerships as well as to help alumni maintain the associations, friendships and interests they formed as students at UMSL. Our alumni continue to achieve successful and significant employment after graduation, and each member of our alumni association exerts a positive impact on the St. Louis region. Our Alumni Association is made up of several chapters and committees, including a student component that serves as our Student Alumni Association, STAT (Students Today, Alumni Tomorrow). The Community Relations component of the UMSL alumni association is forming partnerships and building relationships with surrounding communities, businesses, elected officials, and police and fire departments. UMSL is proud to be collaborating with the 24:1 initiative and supports its goal of linking the 24 suburban communities surrounding the Normandy School District with one share division of strengthening the community.

The Recreation and Wellness Center provides approximately 100,000 square feet of space for open recreation, intramural sports, and wellness education. The Millennium Student Center opened in Fall 2000. Constructed of red brick and stone, the Center features a dramatic three-story rotunda, escalator and fireplace. The building is connected to the North Campus Quad, between Lucas and Clark halls, by an enclosed climate-controlled pedestrian bridge that spans a valley that in time will host a series of attached lakes. Student-related services, previously scattered about the campus, are now under one roof providing students with a "one-stop shopping" experience. The Center also houses the bookstore, food services, two student lounges, a conference center, and a bank.

　Established in 1963, UMSL is the newest university in the UM System. As of 2012, it is the largest university by enrollment in the St. Louis area with 16,719 students. UMSL's campus is located on the former grounds of the Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis County, stretching into the municipalities of Bellerive, Bel-Nor and Normandy. However, the campus' mailing address says St. Louis City. Additional facilities are located at the former site of Marillac College and at Grand Center, both in St. Louis city. 　Bachelor's, Master's, and doctoral programs are offered through the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business Administration, the College of Education, the College of Fine Arts and Communication, the College of Nursing, and the College of Optometry. The business school is AACSB-accredited and is the only university in the St. Louis area to also be AACSB-accredited in accounting. Preprofessional, a joint engineering program with Washington University in St. Louis, and evening programs are also offered. UMSL is home of an optometry school, providing its students with a doctorate (OD). Only 17 optometry schools exist in all of North America including Puerto Rico. The Pierre Laclede Honors College is UMSL's honors program. 　The University contains three libraries: The Thomas Jefferson Library which is the main library of the University, the Ward E. Barnes Library which houses the materials of relevance to the nursing, education and optometry programs, and the St. Louis Mercantile Library which was founded in 1846 and is the oldest library west of the Mississippi River. The campus contains two stops on MetroLink, St. Louis' regional light rail system. A student center, academic buildings, parking structures, a performing arts center, and residential housing have been constructed over the past ten years as part of campus improvement programs. The University has a dual-enrollment agreement with Gulf University for Science and Technology, Kuwait. The University owns and operates St. Louis Public Radio.
