Dedicated over 70 years ago in downtown Santa Cruz, the Civic Auditorium remains a major pillar of the Santa Cruz Community. On alternate occasions since opening day, the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium has been a concert hall, sports arena, theater, ice skating rink, town hall, convention center, exhibition hall, dance hall, sound stage, banquet room, ceremonial hall, movie theater, Red Cross shelter, graduation hall and more. The Civics’ seventy-plus years of service have reflected the growth and change in our community and in the world at large. To unravel the thread of Auditorium history is to journey a civic and cultural timeline of the latter half of the twentieth century. The Civic has hosted Eleanor Rosevelt, H.H. Dalai Lama, Coretta Scott King, Gloria Steinem, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley & the Wailers, and Bonnie Raitt to name just a few. The building is home to the nationally recognized Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music, the Santa Cruz County Symphony, and the Santa Cruz Follies benefiting senior programs. Sporting events include the Santa Cruz Derby Girls, Dad's Club and the U.S. Open Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Tournament. There’s more to come…

It is dedicated to the music and fine arts as created and taught by the Batish Gharana / Family of Patiala, India. Our Guruji is Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish whose works you willl learn here. Followed by the teaching of his son Pandit Ashwin Kumar Batish and his grand son Shri Keshav Ram Batish. The Batish family hails from the Punjab region of North India. Pandit Shiv Dayal ji learned Indian music from his guruji Chandan Ram Charan of Patiala. Guru Charan ji was a highly respected music composer and teacher. Many of his songs were regularly sung and presented live in concert by some of the musicians of the era including such luminaries as Abdul Aziz Khan, Pandit Raman ji, Pandit Shiv Dyala Batish ji, Saigal et al. The Batish Gharana was formed in the early 70s by Pandit Shiv Dayal Batish ji when he started teaching at the University of California in Santa Cruz California. From 1970 to 2006 he and his song Pandit Ashwin Kumar ji, worked on creating some of the greatest educational writings and compositions that are presently undergoing final editing to be presented tot he world of Indian music. These works encompass both styles of present day classical Indian music raga forms; the Carnatic and the Hindustani.
