The motto of Artisans Gallery is “Dedicated to the Creative Spirit.” Artisans celebrates this by featuring American made crafts with an emphasis on the wealth of local artists that Santa Cruz and the surrounding communities have to offer. Artisans Gallery carries wall art, jewelry, glass, ceramics, metal work, pottery, woodworking, cards, candles, kid’s items, bath products and more. Artisans Gallery has rich history in Santa Cruz. Originally an artists’ cooperative, it was founded in 1976. On October 17, 1989, Santa Cruz was hit by a 7.1 earthquake, which destroyed much of downtown. In the face of tremendous economic and physical upheaval, the artists of the cooperative felt they had to disband. Fortunately, John and Juleen Lisher, local members of the downtown community, were determined to revive the store that had become a fixture of Santa Cruz. As Santa Cruz slowly recovered from the earthquake, the Lishers slowly expanded the size and scope of the gallery to carry artists from all over North America. In 1993, the Lishers hired 16-year old Linnaea Holgers (James). In February of 2009, Linnaea celebrated her 16-year anniversary with the store by purchasing Artisans Gallery. Linnaea has continued to be “dedicated to the creative spirit,” and has further expanded the gallery by offering rotating art shows as a part of downtown’s First Friday program. The items found it Artisans Gallery are meant to be used and appreciated, from preparing food on a unique wooden cutting board to enjoying coffee in a locally made ceramic mug to wearing a pair of handmade earrings. Artisans Gallery keeps in mind the words of William Morris, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” Artist Policy We are dedicated to promoting hand made work by living artists and building relationships artists directly. We carry American made work from all over North America with an emphasis on local artists. We carry artists on consignment with a 50/50 split and we also buy outright. We do carry a very small portion of work made out of the USA, however our relationship is based with the artist who designs the work.

Kaiwa Art and Play Space is a unique studio, play space, and gallery where kids can converse, create, and curate. With the increased pressures and constrictions of modern public schooling, children need spaces to discuss ideas and create freely. Kaiwa offers: -Creative, interdisciplinary classes for ages 1-12 (6-8 kids per class) -Open hours for studio and play time -A chance for children to collaborate with professionals in the arts, humanities, sciences, and technology -Birthday Parties -Workshops My name is Keara Connor and I have a Masters of Art Education, a post-baccalaureate certificate in Nonprofit Management, and a CA Teaching Certificate in Art. I have taught in a variety of community and school settings, with roles such as the lead art educator of the Greensboro Children's Museum in NC, a lead teacher at the Lyndon House Art Center in GA, a lead preschool teacher at Arrow in GA, and an after-school teacher at Westlake Elementary in Santa Cruz. You can find more information about my work here: kearaconnor.wix.com/arteducation Kaiwa means "conversation" in Japanese. It is a place for the brilliance of children's ideas and dreams to be heard, valued, and shared with the larger community. It says, "Your thoughts have value and are worthy of sharing." Kaiwa will connect children to professionals working in diverse fields to engage in meaningful dialogue. Children will discuss current challenges and opportunities in these fields and collaborate to create art projects that reflect their learning and contributions to the conversation. In Kaiwa's model, art emerges from dialogue, play, and experimentation. Kaiwa believes quality art education should engage children in an authentic art practice personal to them and their growing understanding of the world. Kaiwa believes that all children have their own stories to tell and wondrously different ways of telling them. As Keara began to engage in conversations with children during art-making, asking silly and serious questions, she was amazed by the power of children to synthesize knowledge, weave complex story-lines, and experiment with materials in personal and novel ways. She also quickly noticed the excitement of children when allowed to tell their own stories and create art in a spontaneous and free environment. Kaiwa believes great ideas develop alongside feelings of freedom and joy. Kaiwa gives students the freedom to express their creativity, ingenuity, and joy as an emergent process. Kaiwa develops projects that respect the intelligence and autonomy of children to make their own decisions, while exposing them to new knowledge of the world and artistic tools and techniques that inspire growth. Kaiwa believes in growing alongside students through dialogue and moments of shared laughter and awe. Many of the art objects made at Kaiwa become a part of the exhibit space, inviting wonder, play, and further exploration. In a jointly curatorial process, children and teachers decide how to arrange the gallery space and what to include, take home, or discard. The result is an experimental and interactive gallery space that welcomes visitors to view, contemplate, and add to the conversation.

Stacy is a Santa Cruz artist and printmaker whose studio is located on the West Side. Her works on paper include etchings, monoprints, monotypes, paintings and drawings with a natural history angle. 'Like' her page to be updated about her recent work and shows. A variety of her prints are for sale at her etsy site - www.etsy.com/shop/stacyfrank ____________ Artist's Bio ____________ Born in Michigan and raised in the San Francisco Bay Area, I am fortunate to come from an artistic family. As a student at the University of California in Santa Cruz I began my art training in 1991 and earned a Bachelor's degree in Environmental Studies with a concentration in scientific illustration. From 1994 through 2000 I studied with the printmakers Howard Ikemoto, Julie Connell, Paul Roehl and Karen Tossavainen at local college classes and workshops. Animals, botanicals, treescapes and scenics predominate - this is a direct result of my love of nature and my training in scientific illustration. This region offers an unlimited source of inspiration for field sketching, photography and plein air painting. I enjoy all facets of printmaking but my favorite technique is the most direct one – drypoint. The soft feathered lines, rich blacks and delicate nature that set this method apart are pleasing to me. Since this is a fragile technique the print runs are much smaller, which makes the image more fleeting and precious. Recently I have been exploring color printing and all of the exacting procedures involved in ink combinations and registration. Though the margin for error is greater than in other methods, the results are so much more vibrant than single-color printing. My work has been exhibited in numerous national art competitions as well as at venues such as The Monterey Museum of Art, The Bolinas Museum, The Springfield Museum and The Triton Museum. All of my print runs range from single monoprint to editions of fifty. My collection is well-archived and constantly growing. I live in Santa Cruz, California with my husband, Michael and our dog Izzy.
