Civil Air Patrol, the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, is a nonprofit organization with more than 61,000 members nationwide, operating a fleet of 550 aircraft. CAP, in its Air Force auxiliary role, performs 90 percent of continental U.S. inland search and rescue missions as tasked by the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center and is credited by the AFRCC with saving an average of 80 lives annually. Its volunteers also perform homeland security, disaster relief and drug interdiction missions at the request of federal, state and local agencies. The members play a leading role in aerospace education and serve as mentors to 27,000 young people currently participating in the CAP cadet programs. CAP received the World Peace Prize in 2011 and has been performing missions for America for 71 years. CAP also participates in Wreaths Across America, an initiative to remember, honor and teach about the sacrifices of U.S. military veterans. Surfers Healing was founded by Israel and Danielle Paskowitz. Their son, Isaiah, was diagnosed with autism at age three. Like many children with autism, he often suffered from sensory overload– simple sensations could overwhelm him. The ocean was the one place where he seemed to find respite. A former competitive surfer, Israel hit upon an idea–with Isaiah on the front of his surfboard, and Izzy steering from the back, the two spent the day surfing together. Surfing had a profound impact on Isaiah. Israel and Danielle decided they wanted to share this unique therapy, they began to host day camps at the beach where children with autism and their families could be exposed to a completely new experience of surfing. This was the 11th year that Virginia Beach has hosted the Surfers Healing Foundation Team. Each year has been a huge success thanks to the sea of support from our many Community Partners, Sponsors and Volunteers. This occasion has been rated by locals and participating families as one of the most touching and most inspirational events they have ever experienced! The Young Marines is a youth education and service program for boys and girls, ages 8 through completion of high school. The Young Marines promotes the mental, moral, and physical development of its members. The program focuses on character building, leadership, and promotes a healthy, drug-free lifestyle. Commanded by Captain Jim Rose, the Marine Rescue Team was established in August 1999, to administer a program which provides for the immediate response and timely arrival of a specially trained and equipped Dive Team, to respond to requests for rescues involving Drownings, Near-Drownings or Water Related Rescues. In addition, they apply special procedures and search techniques for locating and removing patients from hazards, and provide additional assistance to BLS and ALS personnel when necessary according to medical and operational protocol. As a member of the Tidewater Regional Underwater Search and Rescue Team, this team continues to excel resulting in requests by regional, state and national organizations for assistance. Just to name a few such requests as the Flight TWA 800 crash on July 1996 and the search for John F. Kennedy Jr. Piper Saratoga off the east coast on July 1999.
