At New City School® we recognize that students must be prepared for tomorrow's challenges with a rigorous academic curriculum. Our students average more than three years above grade level on standardized tests. But those achievements form only the foundation. At New City we work towards genuine understanding. Our students are taught how to discover the question, work as members of a team, and solve the problem. These skills will continue to be the hallmarks of successful members of society. Here are a few examples of how our teachers turn familiar elementary school units into memorable events students are still talking about years later. First graders create and present plant museums. Third graders research and build Our use of Multiple Intelligences theory as a basis for curriculum enhances the strength of our academic program. It allows children to develop in many different ways and to use their range of strengths and talents in learning and growing. Our kids learn how to solve problems while appreciating the fun and excitement of the process! New City School® helps students find the pathways to learning that best fit their talents. At the same time, kids learn to appreciate the strengths of others, a big step toward understanding differences and building bridges of cooperation towards common goals. Our students graduate with confidence about their futures. Their success, both as achievers and group leaders, is noted often by their secondary school teachers. OUR PROGRAMS: Recycling On the Go St. Louis Earth Day’s Recycling On the Go is the region’s first wide-scale event-greening program. Green Dining Alliance A program committed to working with St. Louis restaurants to reduce their environmental impact. By considering all areas of operations, the GDA puts strong emphasis on reducing, recycling and composting restaurant waste as well as sourcing sustainable food, to-go ware and cleaning supplies. St. Louis Earth Day Festival The St. Louis Earth Day Festival is the oldest and largest Earth Day Festival in the Midwest. Attracting 30,000 attendees on average annually, the Festival is a premier destination for the public to learn about a wide-range of environmental issues in an engaging and entertaining setting. Recycling Extravaganza A collection event for hard-to-recycle items made its debut at the 2011 St. Louis Earth Day Festival. All are invited to load up their cars, trucks or bicycle baskets with any (or all) of the items that will be collected by one of a dozen partnering non-profit organizations or recycling companies. St. Louis Earth Day Symposium This important educational and networking event for local governments and planning professionals gives tools for implementing sustainable considerations in new projects throughout the St. Louis area.

Foundation of BAC There are 3,000 Washington University African-American alumni worldwide. Founded in May 1983, Washington University’s Black Alumni Council (BAC) began with the 10th year reunion of the Class of 1973. In early 1983, Alex Carroll initiated the reunion in honor of the avowed largest Black graduating class. Campus administrator, Cynthia L. Cosby, and others worked with Alex in sponsoring the first Black alumni reunion and formulating an alumni association. A steering committee comprised of alumni volunteers laid the foundation of what was to become the Washington University Black Alumni Council. Through the generosity and untiring support of many alumni and friends, the Black Alumni Council Scholarship Endowment has reached $100,000 in addition to additional noteworthy scholarship funds. The Black Alumni Council began fund-raising activities in February 1989 with its first scholarship dinner-dance. The BAC established its first scholarship endowment in February 1993 with a $50,000 gift to Washington University. Since that time and with other annual scholarship benefits, many African American students attending Washington University have benefitted from these scholarship resources. The Black Alumni Council has active councils in St. Louis, Missouri, Houston, Texas, Chicago, Illinois, Atlanta, Georgia, Washington, D.C., and Baltimore, Maryland and currently seeks to grow chapters in all of the contiguous United States! African American alumni throughout the nation participate in such BAC activities as college fairs and other recruitment activities, as well as special events within their respective states. Are you passionate about art or architecture? Have you considered a career as an architect, artist, or designer? Our Pre-College Programs—Architecture Discovery Program and Portfolio Plus—give students the opportunity to develop skills that are fundamental to these fields while producing work in a real studio. Drawing courses, field trips, and workshops will provide you the opportunity to interact and exchange ideas with students who are interested in a variety of media and areas of study. You will also pursue specific interests such as Architecture, Ceramics, Communication Design, Painting, Printmaking/Book Arts, or Textile Design. In the process, you will learn how to document and develop your portfolio. Our programs are open to students 16 or older who have completed their sophomore year of high school. Upon successful completion, you will earn 3 college credits and may receive letters of recommendation for college admission. Graduate Professional Council (GPC) is the university-wide graduate student organization that represents more than 6,000 graduate and professional students from all eight schools at Washington University in St. Louis: Architecture, Art, Arts & Sciences, Business, Engineering, Law, Medicine, and Social Work. GPC hosts events and provides social/networking opportunities for graduate students to meet other students across academic disciplines.
