Thalia Hall
Distance: 0.8 mi Competitive Analysis
1807 S Allport St
Chicago, IL 60608

Thalia Hall – Faber and Pagels, architects Commissioned 1892 – John Dusek Landmark designation 10/25/1989 Thalia Hall is a historic landmark located in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. In September 2013, owners Bruce Finkelman [Beauty Bar, Bite, Empty Bottle, EBP, Longman & Eagle] and Craig Golden [Longman & Eagle, Space, Union] will launch three new concepts within this storied property: a re-established beer inspired restaurant, a Punch focused cocktail bar, and a public hall fit for all types of events. Thalia Hall was founded by John Dusek at the turn of the century as a neighborhood establishment. Dusek was a family man, a tavern owner, and a facilitator of the arts. He was a visionary, and the founding father of Thalia Hall. His hope for the corner of 18th & Allport was to build a public hall for the community. In 1892 his dream became reality: a multi-purpose property that would offer commercial storefronts, residential housing, and a hall for the community. John Dusek built Thalia Hall with the hopes of bringing arts and entertainment from Bohemia to play for his bohemian neighbors. Architects Faber & Pagel, who modeled the hall after the Prague opera house, completed the public hall in 1892. For over 7 decades the Hall was a beacon of the neighborhood community. Thalia existed as one of the most ornate theaters of its times. This opulence, which differentiated it from more traditional interior theaters, was granted landmark status in 1989. The hall was used not only to house a multitude of entertainment over the years, but was also used as a central meeting spot for the neighborhood. In 1915, the hall was used to draft a bill paving the way for bohemian statehood and the birth of Czechoslovakia in 1918. Closed to the Public in the 1960′s, Thalia Hall has remained virtually untouched until the end of 2013, when we first began working on it. Our goal is to restore Thalia to its original charm and character, to breath life into this community treasure, and to bring a wide array of music, community, and artistic events to the neighborhood it serves.

Welcome to Moxee Brewpub and Mad Mouse Brewery, where we fuse regional American dining with a small-batch brew house and craft cocktail bar. “Small-batch” underlies everything we do here—from the brew house to the kitchen. We’ve gathered recipes from 26 years of cooking and travelling, and we strive to provide the community with a place that individuals and families alike can call their local spot. Moxee is located at historic 724 Maxwell St. in the heart of University Village in Chicago, Illinois. “Edible ingenuity and liquid innovation.” At Moxee, we do what we know best: Beer, BBQ, and good lookin’ scratch cookin’. We’ve been all over this great land and like to think of our menu as an ongoing love letter to America. Each dish carries something special we’ve encountered in our travels, and we’ve been fortunate enough to hone some of our recipes at our sister restaurants—Prairie Moon in Evanston, IL and Wheatberry Tavern in Buchanan, MI.

Wise Owl is not just your typical bar in the Near West Side, but rather a unique contemporary American fare, craft cocktail, and local brew bistro, combined to bring you an unforgettable experience. Wise Owl is where cocktails and cuisine combine for a perfect evening of entertainment. With the evolution of the cocktail culture blowing through Chicago, lead bartender and mixologist Benjamin Tozser was brought in to spearhead Wise Owl’s creative beverage program. Our vast cocktail menu ranges from traditional cocktails to an assortment of eclectic and refined house cocktails for those who are looking to try something new. As homage to the great city of Chicago, we have primarily selected local craft brews and locally-distilled spirits as well. Our carefully selected wine menu is designed to pair with individual courses, but is outstanding enjoyed without food as well. Our food is made in-house and from scratch. Executive Chef Mark Hill (formerly of David Burke's Primehouse) uses fresh and local ingredients whenever possible to bring you a satisfying dining experience. Our menu features classic comfort food from America and around the globe, made with extra care and a few twists on tradition. We make our own wing sauces and fry them to order. We house cure and smoke our own salmon and make it into sliders. We make our own sausage and put it on a hand-tossed pizza. And did someone say Rumchata cookies? We make those too. If it’s sports you’re looking for then look no further. Located just minutes from the Madhouse on Madison, Wise Owl provides an optimal location for Blackhawks and Bulls fans to tailgate before and after each game. As for viewing the games, Wise Owl dedicates itself to providing the perfect atmosphere for all local, national and world-wide sporting events. With our 150-inch projector and multiple flat-screens, Wise Owl assures you’ll catch all the action from virtually any seat in the house. For those who are driving to the United Center, we offer parking for more than 30 cars as well as a complimentary shuttle service for all of our patrons to all home games (shuttle service begins fall 2015). Wise Owl is also just a matter of steps away from the Racine/Blue Line stop and the Racine exit at I-290. Home to one of the largest outdoor patios in the Near West Side/West Loop area, Wise Owl provides seating to more than 60 people in our garden alone. Located one block east of Halsted St. we offer the same food menu as our Wrigleyville and Wicker Park locations and have a full bar for you to enjoy as well. Then choose your favorite sandwich meats and cheeses, which we heat up and top with our home cut French fries, our signature vinaigrette coleslaw and fresh tomatoes. Next, top with another slice of bread and voila! You have the biggest, tastiest sandwich in town! If you think you have the guts, try the Lucky's challenge and make our wall of fame.
