The Fisher Building is a landmark skyscraper located at 3011 West Grand Boulevard in the heart of the New Center area of Detroit, Michigan. The ornate building is designed in an Art Deco style, constructed of limestone, granite, and several types of marble. The Fisher family financed the building with proceeds from the sale of Fisher Body to General Motors. It was designed to house office and retail space. The building, which contains the elaborate 2,089-seat Fisher Theatre, was designated a National Historic Landmark 29 June 1989. It also houses the headquarters for the Detroit Public Schools.HistoryInitially, architect Joseph Nathaniel French of Albert Kahn Associates planned for a complex of three buildings, with two 30-story structures flanking a 60-story tower. However, the Great Depression kept the project at one tower. The Fisher brothers located the building across from the General Motors Building, now Cadillac Place, as General Motors recently purchased the Fisher Body Company. The two massive buildings spurred the development of a New Center for the city, a business district north of its downtown area.

Vibrant Urban settings reflect the diverse personalities of those that inhabit them. Over time, urban places build upon their histories to capture the moments that tell a story, long after the individuals have gone. The constant touch of human interaction upon the built environment translates into a dynamic setting of mystery, exploration and delight that transcends generations. The result is a sustainable model of economic growth, as new generations are attracted to the opportunities to explore and to learn from their predecessors, to build upon those experiences, and to create new ones. Located in Detroit’s New Center area, just West of the US-10 highway, the sculpture park is to nestle behind the Recycle Here facility on Holden Ave., and buffered by the railroad easement. Enclosed on three sides by either the Recycle Here facility or the railroad berm, the proposed pocket park inherently offers a refuge space amidst a changing urban landscape during Detroit’s historic land use changes. The Lincoln St. sculpture garden, is an instance of public art to serve as a destination and as a discovery. The park is meant to begin humbly as an activity supported by the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs & the Detroit Recreation department. Over time, the park is intended to grow to meet the demands of new explorers and new residents. The sculpture garden benefits from the bustling activity of the recycle center on the weekends. On any given Saturday hundreds of local residents frequent the center to drop off their recyclables. Many residents take advantage of bicycle to frequent the center. Lincoln St. is a small side street that runs parallel to the main vehicular artery of Trumbull Ave. and is utilized by local residents as a short cut, and safe route for their bicycles as automobile traffic is low. Connecting to Trumbull at both the North and South extremities, Lincoln St. offers an exciting one-off exploration of the city as it passes under the railroad viaduct, is anchored by the newly rehabilitated Research Lofts project and provides a direct linkage to Wayne State University and the up and coming Woodbridge neighborhood. The sculpture park seeks to compliment and add value to the experience of bicycle culture and good urban design by offering the touches of human intervention upon the urban landscape through art and culture.

We’ve traveled the world and poured into the hearts and lives of thousands of those under out tutelage. Last year, we danced in New York and had a fabulous summer camp concert. We also danced in the Detroit Design Festival where Tracey Reese (Detroiter, Cass Tech grad), designer of Michelle Obama’s convention speech dress, sent one of her beautiful designer blouses to be presented to our Artistic Director. We established the Acorn Society, a group of young talented dancers (ages 6-12) with awesome potential. We ministered I dance at Advent Services, Christmas services, Noel Night, and Jerusalem Temple for Mentally challenged, to name a few. Delta Sigma Theta Sorority at U of M, Pontiac, and Detroit invited us to dance celebrating in the Centennial Anniversary programs. DWDA brought down the house at the 17th Annual Auto Show Urban Wheels tribute to women with “I’m Every Woman”. A highlight of our season was when seven of our dancers , under age 10 and 5’0, had the opportunity to dance at the Detroit Opera House with the Dance Theatre of Harlem. The audience was thrilled! The Fresh Beginnings program with the Wayne County Health Authority gave our dancers the opportunity through to sow into the hearts of young girls and teens whose lives were very challenging. Our 8 year old Kendal Saffold landed a dance role in the Michigan Opera Theatre’s “Aida”. DWDA Alumni and UArts college grad Demetrius Shields returned from dancing on a cruise ship’s world tour and set choreography on our Acorn dancers. Alum and teacher Gabrielle Smith completed an internship at DWDA as a Wayne State University student and brought vision for many future activities. Alum and teacher Amber Moore graduated summa cum laude fro WSU, on a dance scholarship. Some of the events we’ve participated in include dancing with Insane Posse, completing dance residencies in the community with Artistic Vibrations at Duke Ellington School, an etiquette class sponsored by the Acorn and Intermediate Workshop, the red carpet movie opening with Glory Reelz Christian Film Fest, dance concerts on all levels (children thru professionals), musicals, etc. This summer, our dancers were selected to study with the Dance Theatre of Harlem and Marygrove College. We held our overwhelmingly successful 29th Annual Spring Concert. We now embark on 15 million, 7 hundred, 87 thousand, 463 minutes; 30 years of excellence.

Broadway In Detroit’s beginnings herald back to 1912 when David Tobias (D.T) Nederlander began operating the original Detroit Opera House with the Shubert Brothers. Through the years, the Nederlander family operated several Detroit area theatres including the Shubert Theatre, the Cass Theatre and the Riviera. It was the Fisher Theatre’s 1961 renovation into a legitimate Broadway house that brought the Nederlanders their greatest audiences, rocketing the Fisher’s subscription base into the largest in the country at the time. Over the past 50 years the Nederlander organization has gone on to become one of the biggest names on Broadway, at one time controlling nine Broadway theatres with operations across the US, Canada and Great Britain. Under the Nederlander organization, Broadway In Detroit continues to present the best Broadway productions at the Fisher Theatre and other Detroit area venues including the Detroit Opera House. Past productions have featured Broadway’s biggest names such as Carol Channing, Zero Mostel, Robin Givens, Richard Chamberlain, Molly Ringwald, John O’Hurley and more. Cadillac Place, formerly the General Motors Building, is a landmark high-rise office complex located at 3044 West Grand Boulevard in the New Center area of Detroit, Michigan. It was renamed for the French founder of Detroit, Antoine Laumet de La Mothe, sieur de Cadillac. It is a National Historic Landmark in Michigan, listed in 1985.HistoryGeneral Motors BuildingAfter much pressure by the General Motors Board of Directors, William C. Durant agreed in 1919 to construct a permanent headquarters in Detroit for the company he formed in 1908. The corporation purchased the block between Cass and Second on West Grand Boulevard and removed the 48 structures from the site to begin work.Groundbreaking was held June 2, 1919 and the Cass Avenue wing was ready for occupancy in November 1920 while the remainder of the building was under construction. The building was originally named for Durant, but an internal power struggle led to his ouster in 1921 and the structure was renamed the General Motors Building. However, the initial “D” had already been carved above the main entrance and in several other places on the building where they remain today. The structure was completed in 1922, and served as General Motors world headquarters from 1923 until 2001. It is approximately 2 miles to the southeast of Detroit/Hamtramck Assembly, where Cadillacs are currently built.
