Rudy's bar opened in 1933 by the Rudy family. It was one of the first liquor licenses issued in New York City after prohibition ended. The present owner, Jack, started drinking in Rudy's in 1943 when he was 16; back when Hell's Kitchen was really Hell's Kitchen! Rudy's may be the most well known bar in N.Y.C., with a long and colorful history. The stories Jack can tell. Rudy's still has the original wood door from the day it opened. When you walk through it the feel of the old neighborhood saloon is still there with cheap beer, free hot dogs, and great people

On January 1, 1897 Hartley House opened its doors to the people of New York City’s 15th district, an area then described as “a very wretched and densely populated portion of the city.” The Settlement House was established by the Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor on property donated by Marcellus Hartley, the son of former Association secretary, Robert M. Hartley, for whom Hartley House was named. Its purpose was to serve as a place for social reform through education, volunteerism and charity. Its purpose now is similar: to provide the residents of the Hell’s Kitchen community with services that meet their present needs and permanently empower them as individuals. In 2011, Hartley House continues to build upon its 114 year commitment to improving the lives of the residents of Hell’s Kitchen by enhancing and expanding our six programs that provide comprehensive services to children, adults, and the elderly. Today, throughout our community, over 1,000 of our neighbors at any given time are receiving the specialized services they need to overcome the obstacles they face.
