The University of Maryland, Baltimore County is an American public research university, located in Baltimore County, Maryland, United States, mostly in the community of Catonsville, approximately 10 minutes from downtown Baltimore City, 9 minutes from Baltimore–Washington International Airport, and 30 minutes from Washington, D.C. With a fall 2014 enrollment of about 14,000 students, over 50 undergraduate majors, over 60 graduate programs, and the first university research park in Maryland, UMBC has been named the #1 Up-and-Coming University for six years in a row, since 2009, by US News & World Report. UMBC’s Intermedia and Digital Arts (IMDA) M.F.A. Program is accepting applications from artists seeking to expand or reinvent their practice. Committed to art that poses unique conceptual and social challenges, IMDA offers an environment that provides artists a studio, courses in emerging methods, contemporary art and theory, and high-end research centers. Graduate students also take advantage of Baltimore’s vibrant art scene while pursuing issues of food justice, the environment, transportation, urban communities, translation, race and gender identity, gift economies, and technology in both intellectual and formal terms. State-of-the-art facilities in a variety of media-based disciplines result in projects such as street interventions, distributed networks, games, installations, performances, sculptural objects, prints, drawings, photographs, videos, interactive pieces, animations, public displays, and other socially engaged works. Financial support includes Research Assistantships that include up to full-tuition remission, plus health care and a stipend. Students are additionally eligible to apply for internal research and merit-based grants to support their work. Prominent Visiting Artists present their work regularly and give one-on-one feedback to graduate students. We are the UMBC chapter of the large non-profit organization Global Brigades. We host 3 branches of the brigades, a Medical-Public Health hybrid brigade, a Dental brigade, and a Microfinance brigade. We plan to travel abroad to countries sponsored by Global Brigades (Panama, Honduras, Nicaragua, Ghana) to service communities by working with other volunteers and community members themselves to improve the health of their population. The Student Government Association (SGA) is the voice of the undergraduate students at UMBC. Serving as one of the governing bodies at UMBC, the SGA meets with other students, faculty, staff, and administrators and works on initiatives and projects in support of an active, academically enriched, social student environment. The SGA has an Executive Branch, Senate and Finance Board. Every undergraduate student at UMBC is a member of the Student Government Association (SGA). 20 elected officers and many appointed officers run programs and services and organize initiatives and projects to strengthen the UMBC community. SGA’s purpose is to organize and support undergraduate students in creating distinctive community, co-curricular and academic experiences; identify and voice students’ hopes and concerns; engage students in campus activities and decision-making; build mutually beneficial partnerships with individuals and organizations on and off campus and promote and defend students’ welfare.

The Sondheim Public Affairs Scholars Program supports talented undergraduates aspiring to careers in service of the public interest in government, non-profit organizations, corporations, and the community. Sondheim Scholars understand and address the urgent social problems of American cities and communities through: Service Learning with vulnerable populations Internships in local, state, national government, non-profits, and law Opportunities to complete original research or activism projects as undergraduates Positive advising and mentoring guidance from faculty and staff
The department offers physics degrees at the BA, BS, MS and PhD levels, supported by over 20 tenure-track faculty. The department also maintains a robust and growing research portfolio, with concentrations in the following fields: •Astrophysics (active galactic nuclei, relativistic jets, large scale structure of the universe) •Atmospheric Physics (radiative transfer, Lidar, satellite remote sensing, dynamics) •Nanoscale Physics (THz science, molecular electronics, nanomaterials, organic-inorganic interfaces) •Physics Education (secondary education, peer learning/guided inquiry) •Quantum Optics and Information Science (quantum computing and imaging) As one of the most rapidly growing physics departments in the country, UMBC’s Department of Physics has experienced great changes in the last 15 years: •Number of tenure-track faculty has doubled •Research faculty has grown to over 20 •PhD and MS programs established in Applied Physics and Atmospheric Physics •Graduate population has exceeded 50 full-time students Researchers in the department are funded by NASA, NSF, Department of Defense, Department of Energy and private industry. Due to the close proximity to many government labs, our students have opportunities, via internships and fellowships, to work closely with researchers at the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the National Institutes of Science and Technology (NIST), the Army and Naval Research Laboratories and the NSA’s Laboratory for Physical Sciences.

Our BMES Mission: To build and support the biomedical engineering community, locally,and nationally, with activities designed to communicate recent advances and discoveries, and inventions; promote education and professional development.
Active Minds is the only organization working to utilize the student voice to change the conversation about mental health on college campuses. By developing and supporting chapters of a student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy group on campuses, the organization works to increase students’ awareness of mental health issues, provide information and resources regarding mental health and mental illness, encourage students to seek help as soon as it is needed, and serve as liaison between students and the mental health community (activeminds.org).
