The CalArts Music Technology: Interaction, Intelligence & Design program enables students to build strong musical skills while mastering a variety of technology for the creation of sonic and visual art.
There are two residence halls at CalArts, Chouinard Hall and Ahmanson Hall. Our priority is to facilitate a smooth transition for incoming students new to the Institute, and to offer returning students a reliable and comfortable home base.
Student Affairs at CalArts provides a variety of support services including career services, personal counseling, special events and activities, and student sponsored clubs and organizations. Student Affairs also offers assistance to students with disabilities and addresses issues pertaining to student rights and responsibilities. Student Affairs also seeks to assist students with transitions, from adjusting as a new student to the CalArts community to preparing for a career post-CalArts. Our staff is dedicated to helping students deal with challenges and problems in all aspects of their lives. We also understand the value of comfort food and soft furniture.
The Experimental Sound Practices program was established for musicians, composers, and sound artists with a strong musical background who want to explore the more radical branches of contemporary sound. While coursework provides a strong foundation in the theory and application of digital media as well as the critical issues surrounding it, making work and presenting it in concert or installation is the key. Opportunities to hear your work include the school-sponsored ESP Nights and the student-run Sounding Out series, as well as self-produced events in our concert halls or other spaces around CalArts. Looking back over the last few years of ESP Night concert programs, I see circuit-bending, instrumental modifications and deconstructions, random sound-effects database surfing, field recordings paired with ionic filters, an amplified rake, terrain-to-sound mappings, typewriter plus string quartet, video game hacking, cracking, and downsmacking, live cooking (and eating), all mixed in with a healthy portion of electroacoustic improvisation and other digital musics. Our creative impulses and critical discourses take us in many directions, but we work together to produce a rich environment for sonic experimentation.
CalArts Career Services links students and alumni to jobs, internships, arts organizations, grants, residencies, study abroad and other opportunities. During the school year, we invite companies for on-campus presentations and recruiting. We also host workshops that focus on résumé and cover letter writing, legal issues in art, teaching, grant writing, budgeting and credit, tax preparation and time management. We're located in the Patty Disney Center for Life and Work, also known as the Generator Building, in G204. Come by for a visit!
The Writing Center, located in the library, is a place where students can meet one-on-one with trained writing tutors to work on any writing-related task they face—from academic papers to artist statements, grant applications to resumes.
