St. James Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral church located at 804 Ninth Avenue in the First Hill neighborhood of Seattle, Washington, United States. It is the mother church of the Archdiocese of Seattle and the seat of its archbishop, currently J. Peter Sartain. The cathedral is named for St. James the Greater, patron saint of the archdiocese, and is the third church in the territory presently known as the Archdiocese of Seattle to bear the name.The need for a cathedral in Seattle arose in 1903, when Edward O'Dea, bishop of what was then known as the Diocese of Nesqually (later spelled "Nisqually"), elected to move the Episcopal see from Vancouver, Washington to Seattle. Construction began in 1905 and was completed in 1907. In 1916, the cathedral underwent major renovations as a result of the collapse of its dome; other major renovations were completed in 1950 and 1994. The cathedral, rectory, and site were designated city landmarks in 1984.

An historic community Established in 1865 when Seattle was still a town with fewer than 1,000 citizens, Trinity has come through Seattle's Great Fire of 1889 and the 2001 Nisqually Earthquake. Plymouth is known for its long-term attention and commitment to social justice advocacy and change. From hosting women's suffrage events, to protecting Chinese laborers in the late nineteenth century riots to peace movements and civil rights struggles (past and present), addressing homelessness, advocating for equal rights for the LGBTQ community, challenging issues of economic inequality and embracing immigration issues, Plymouth takes lead as a voice for progressive theology in the Northwest and beyond. Plymouth's first services were held in 1869 in Yesler’s Hall above a Pioneer Square drug store. The current distinctive, white building, dedicated in 1967, offers a prime example of Seattle’s mid-century modern architecture. The Sanctuary (seats over 400) underwent major renovation in 2015, including installation of a new C.B. Fisk organ. Intertwined arts, music and worship are primary focus areas. Frequent fine art and community art installations are open to the public. Adult Choir, Children's Choir, Soul Choir and Bell Choir offer ample opportunities for participation and appreciation. The Sanctuary's flexible seating and downtown Seattle location offers a venue for a variety of community events, especially weddings and musical events.
