How a bank became a church! Calvary Temple began in 1972 with an initial group of interested believers from the community under the leadership of Dan Betzer and his wife Darlene. The first church service was held at the Greentree Inn located near the entrance to Cedar Point. The church continued to meet there for two years until a permanent facility was purchased in 1974. What a building it was! A four-story former Western Security Bank, located in downtown Sandusky, Ohio was purchased in October of 1974. The historic forty-by-ninety foot banking room, had pure Italian marble walls with a hand-carved gold-leaf renaissance ceiling. It was converted into the sanctuary. When the church moved in for the first church service on February 9, 1975, much work was still needed to complete the renovation. As it is now utilized, the building has four floors, with the upper-level housing a fellowship hall, classrooms and a kitchen. In 1977, when Rev. Dan Betzer was called to be the speaker for the "Revival Time Radio Broadcast" of the Assemblies of God. Ron and Drema Web then began a ten-year pastoral tenure. In April of 1987, David and Irma Snyder assumed the pastoral duties at the Church. Rev. Snyder had most recently served as a counselor at Emerge Ministries in Akron, Ohio. Previously he was a youth past or in Warren, Ohio. Pastor David Snyder inspired a family-friendly and individual-sensitive ministry. In addition to supporting home and foreign missionaries, Calvary Temple has a daily radio broadcast (Your Prayer Time) and a divorce recovery ministry. Intra-church emphases include Bible Studies and Fellowship Groups. On October 30, 2011, Rev. Paul Bushhorn became the Lead Pastor. This historic bank building now contains rich assets of the grace and peace of Christ. These are being ministered strategically through this church family to its community.
