Mission Art in General is a nonprofit organization that assists artists with the production and presentation of new work. It changes in response to the needs of artists and informs and engages the public about their work. About Art in General was founded in 1981 by artists Martin Weinstein and Teresa Liszka in the General Hardware building—hence the name “Art in General”. Weinstein and Liszka aimed to create a space where artists could exhibit unconventional work and exchange ideas with their peers. The first exhibition took place in 1982. In its 30 years, the organization has emerged as one of New York City’s leading nonprofit arts organizations. Today, Art in General fulfills its mission in a variety of ways, including the organization and presentation of exhibitions, hosting a national and international artist residency program, and through regular public programs and membership events. Beginning in 2005, its exhibition program has focused on the commissioning of new work from artists. Art in General has two main gallery spaces, one on the sixth floor, and another in a street-level storefront known as the Project Space. The exhibition program focuses primarily on presenting artists’ work created through the New Commissions and Artist Residency Programs. When the commissioned artworks and projects are event-based, ephemeral or non-objects, special formats or programming are designed for the public to experience the work. In the past, the gallery has presented exhibitions organized by staff, advisory panels, and guest-curators with artworks primarily, but not exclusively, drawn from an open-call review process.

Brooklyn has an unprecedented opportunity to build a sustainable source of support for its communities, led by the ideas and resources of its communities. As a start-up community foundation, we are assembling a community of donors committed to taking on Brooklyn’s challenges today, while fostering a powerful resource for the future. Through our Community Fund, Donor Advised Fund Program, and strategic initiatives, Brooklyn Community Foundation seeks to mobilize people, capital, and expertise for a fair and just Brooklyn. Our unique approach has three components: first, we listen and engage the community; second, we build on what’s working, funding and supporting successful programs; third, we try new things, and when something works, we invest in its continued success. • Collaborate with local leaders. We partner with local leaders to identify and support proven models and accelerate bold new solutions. • Mobilize capital. We work with donors and manage resources to meet critical charitable goals and build a long-term asset base. • Leverage expertise. We call on a vast network of experts to build on best practices and advance the thinking needed to sustain our work.
Through social entrepreneurship and innovative programs such as Earn-A-Bike, Green Jobs Training Programs, High School Internships, Recycled Arts Workshops, Summer Youth Employment Program, and Kids Ride Club, Recycle-A-Bicycle is dedicated to the health, development, stewardship, and empowerment of NYC youth. On average, RAB salvages 1,200 bicycles each year from the waste stream, diverting a total of 36,000 pounds of waste from NYC's landfills.

Increasingly, people who identify themselves as conservatives are discovering that small government and the death penalty don't go together; some don’t trust the state to get it right on innocence, others believe the system is unfair to victims’ families and beyond repair. As conservatives seek criminal justice reform on a variety of issues they are also finding inefficiencies, inequities and injustices with the death penalty. Conservatives today are finding more reasons than ever to be concerned about the death penalty.
EJUSA works to make the criminal justice system more fair, effective, and responsive by ending the death penalty, strengthening programs that help crime survivors address trauma and rebuild their lives, promoting constructive responses to violence, and enacting common sense criminal justice reforms. We work state by state and city by city to change the conversation, build bridges across disparate constituencies, and strengthen local campaigns so they can win and have national impact.
The Theatre of the Oppressed is an interactive, physical and playful tool used to investigate situations in which we are denied our basic rights, personally and collectively. We use theatrical debate, through games and scenes, to uncover the many possible alternatives to real life challenges. By imagining and rehearsing solutions together onstage, we prepare ourselves to take action offstage!
The Sharpe-Walentas Studio Program awards rent-free non-living studio space to 17 visual artists for year-long residencies. Its mission is to provide a working studio and community for artists. Artists are selected annually based on merit from a competitive pool of applicants by a professional jury.

OneBeat is an international cultural exchange that celebrates the transformative power of the arts through the creation of original, inventive music, and people-to-people diplomacy. In the fall of 2013, approximately 25 musicians (ages 19-35) from around the world will come together in the U.S. for four weeks to collaboratively write, produce, and perform original music, and develop ways that music can make a positive impact on our local and global communities. Building on the success of our inaugural 2012 season, OneBeat 2013 will take place from September 9 to October 6, divided into two segments, a residency and a tour. During the residency, OneBeat Fellows will spend two weeks at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in central Florida, immersed in a process of collaborative music creation and experimentation. During the two-week tour, OneBeat ensembles will collaborate with local musicians to give public performances and lead workshops with youth and community groups. OneBeat Fellows will also work with a diverse group of expert Collaborating Artists— including luminaries of classical music, hip-hop, jazz and more—to develop and deepen the scope of their collaborative work. OneBeat is a musical journey like no other. It is a chance for adventurous musicians from an incredible diversity of traditions to seek common ground, creating new musical combinations, pushing the boundaries of music technology, and finding ways to involve all members of society in the process of musical creativity. OneBeat endeavors to be the nexus of a new way of thinking about how music can connect people from across the world and around the block.
