Helser's opened August 10, 2004 by Alex Helser. We use many family recipes and local ingredients to create our meals, including our buttermilk pancake recipe from Alex's Grandmother. Our approach to food and service comes from our own desire of how we would like to be treated and how we feel that every dish should be worth each bite. Our goal is to source the highest quality ingredients while at the same time being conscientious about affordability. We always use organic, free range eggs (sometimes from our own chickens), our waffle and pancake mixes, biscuits, and cookies are scratch made with mostly organic ingredients. We make everything in house including sauces, dressings, soup, & chili. Our sandwich breads and bagels are locally sourced as well as some of our seasonal produce. We use organic ingredients whenever possible because we believe what you put into your body matters!

Bad Habit Room is the event space with the heart of a jezebel. Dubbed Saraveza’s Speakeasy, Bad Habit Room is an elegant 900 square foot room with 100 year old brick walls, restored wood floors, floor-to-ceiling gold velvet curtains, handcrafted mahogany bar and a vintage-style ice box. We use the best methods to make the best ice cream What’s the Scoop? is a small batch ice cream shop featuring ice cream and sorbets made from scratch and frozen with liquid nitrogen, a process which allows our ice cream to be frozen much faster than with a traditional ice cream machine. The shorter freezing time translates into much smaller ice crystals and an extraordinary creaminess. In direct contrast to the ultra-fast freezing method, What’s the Scoop? methodically works with each ingredient, slowly infusing the cream with real ingredients such as roasted nuts and coffee, and hand-crafting our signature fortune cookie cones, toffees, nut brittles, candied fruits and sauces. Flavors such as Brown Butter Almond Brittle, Peanut Butter Curry and Bourbon Toffee compliment classic flavors like a deep, dark Chocolate; a custom blended Vanilla, featuring four different vanillas; and a very minty Mint Chunk.Our ice cream is all natural and hormone free and we focus on the best quality of ingredients, using local sources who use sustainable processes whenever possible. We use sustainable business practices. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines the word sustainable as: “relating to, or being a method of harvesting or using a resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged”. For us this means we run our business with an eye towards how we impact every aspect of our environment. Our menu is designed to reflect the food of the everyday Peruvian – quick, flavorful, street food and sandwiches served in a bustling environment. This is the food our Lima-raised Chef and co-owner, Catalina Acuña ate growing up, shared with her friends after school, and enjoyed while out-and-about in Lima neighborhoods. In 2005, Catalina’s cousin and co-owner, Sadie Morrison, an Oregon-native customer service and operations manager, began joining Catalina on her annual travels to Peru and quickly developed a passion for Peruvian food and culture. In 2011 we joined together to open Las Primas, Spanish for “the cousins,” and share casual, fresh, and authentic Peruvian foods with Portlanders. It is important to us that our space reflects our love for all things Peruvian and we put our hearts into making it so. From the large mural we painted ourselves, to the counter-tops we surfaced with thousands of bottle caps and Peruvian candy wrappers, we want the bright colors of Peru to greet everyone who walks through the doors.
